ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

Big piece in Four Four Two this month - headlined English Football's Darkest Months, about 1985
Some choice lines from the bit about Heysel

'The crumbling ground was hopelessly ill-equipped to stage a European Cup final'

'Many Italian expats in Belgium had bought tickets in the 'neutral' zone next to the Liverpool end, a flimsy chicken wire fence separating the rivals who exchanged missiles. English fans broke through… a dilapidated wall collapsed…'

'Ignoring the preposterous decision to host a game of that size in a decaying venue, Thatcher wasted no time in pinning the blame for the disaster on Liverpool supporters… her fire fuelled by rumours that the Heysel trouble was fuelled by left-wing agencies on the continent.'

History well and truly rewritten

This summer there has defo been a major push by LFC and their media to re-write the events of 1985 by pushing "the context" a lot more.

The thing that really got me though was the fact the club never had a memorial set up for the 40th anniversary and made some excuse about having one ready to go for 3 months time as they 'didn't want to clash with the Juve anniversary memorial'. That was utter BS and they just didn't consider it early enough because it's not on their radar apart from any embarrassment the memory of it causes them. And the 'memorial' they have planned btw is another half arsed plaque rather than a memorial garden or monument or something more fitting.

It's shameful. And the media who cravenly repeat their propaganda are the worst of them.

Liverpool FC is massive business, and as we all know: nothing gets in the way of making cash. Not even respecting the memory of that day.
