The Now-Irrelevant 2024/25 Relegation Battle (Without Everton!)

It doesn’t. You’re trying to argue something that just isn’t there. I said most of the season I didn’t think we’d go down because the bottom 3 were conceding a lot more than us and our defence would keep us up. A lot of other people said we were going down. Since Dyche has left the bottom 3 haven’t even got past the 17 point mark we were on (with a game in hand) at the time he left. So unless people think we’d lose all 10 under Dyche to make it 12 wins in a row, it was a fair assessment by me, the bottom 3 are very poor and their defensive performances were the indicator to it.

We’d also previously had the 4th best defence in the league the season prior and our record with Branthwaite back playing this season was much better than the newly promoted teams, another indicator showing that as long as he stayed fit we probably wouldn’t be in trouble.

Moyes said it himself, we didn’t look like a team that would be in trouble.
We all know what has happened since Moyes joined but before then this happened:

At the time Moyes was appointed Ipswich had taken 12 points from their previous 11 games, Wolves had taken 14 from their previous 11 games and Everton had taken 9 from their previous 11 games.

This is hardly evidence that we were in anyway superior to teams around us at the time. Of course, you will ignore the evidence once again to support your agenda.

What agenda?

I said the teams around us weren’t very good back then even when the evidence wasn’t as compelling (as you’ve pointed out). They’ve proven to not be very good. You can keep saying how many points they had at what time but look at the league table…they’re not very good. It’s not an agenda to say teams aren’t very good before it’s conclusively proven, sometimes it’s just very obvious they’re not that good. That was the case here.

Remember when Dave was saying if Moyes didn't win his third game in charge TFG would be looking at cutting their losses and sacking him?

We might have stayed up under Dyche, but given the turnaround since Moyes came in I can't for the life of me comprehend why anyone would think it was anything other than 100% the right decision.

Cunha was always going to get the extra game ban. I thought he would get 2/3 extra. Him not playing might even be given freedom to other players who lets say cant express themselfs because of Cunha

Just perusing the table after reading about the earliest the bottom three can be relegated etc

5th and 6th place Man City and Newcastle have lost the same number of games as us (9). We have lost 6 few games than Spurs. Obviously we have the most draws (13) ahead of Brighton (11) and Arsenal (10); clear to see where Arsenal went wrong.

I knew all of our W/L/D stats, but when compared with others, it’s a properly bizarre season we’ve managed to construct. 🤣

It’s funny how you have those sliding doors moments in relegation battles where changing a win to a loss can completely change the complexion of things

I think back to that game in March 2015 where it felt like we were dropping like a stone but then we beat Newcastle at home and the mood totally shifted

The win over Leicester at home was the big one this season I think, especially as they’d just beaten Spurs and you’d think they’d have the wind in their sails because of it

We defeated them with such ease that it was both a real shot in the arm and also highlighted just how much more this team was capable of with a change of management

If Dyche were still manager and we’d lost that game, then it would have been really ugly

Yeah. The Spurs game gave major hope felt like a new dawn, the Brighton game was a pleasant surprise but the Leicester game was when I was comfortable we were basically safe.
