2024/25 Jordan Pickford

He's part of a team, the team kept us up not one player on his own. Pickford has pulled of some crucial saves but it's wrong to say he single handedly stopped us getting relegated
If only he could have come and caught some crosses with both hands during those few seasons I might have bought into the myth that he single handedly kept us up.

At the time, I'd put it down to us getting a few more quid when we do eventually sell him. I'm perhaps more surprised by the fact we've still got him, given the money troubles that have plagued us over the same period of time. How happy I am that we still do. Putting the goal at the weekend to one side, (he's not the only keeper guilty doing what he did) he's saved us far more times than not.
Jesus.
He got beat by a free kick from the edge of the box, its not as if he dropped a cross into Fernandes' feet.

The blame game for goals in football is madness. We dissect every goal we concede as 'who can we blame for that one' where's when we score a goal, its never down to opposition mistakes, only ever down to a 'great finish or pass'

This is just not based in reality though. If we sold Pickford before the deductions we would've went down. We would've had a worse keeper who wasn't capable of pulling off any one of the double save vs Chelsea, the penalty save vs Leicester or the saves vs Bournemouth just off the top of my head. We would not have reinvested the funds and definitely wouldnt have improved. As for saying he cost us points in deductions, 'he' cost us like 9 million pounds in places dropped. It would've been closer to 90 million if he was sold.

Take one look at the level of keepers the other relegation candidates had/have. Pickford is a decisive factor in us still being a premier league team. This big brain thinking really isn't as smart as you think.
It’s really not that big brained to understand that making different decisions can lead to different outcomes and that also, and I know this is going to blow your mind, means positive outcomes are on the table.

This

When I saw where Bruno was able to hit that second free kick from, in my mind it was 50/50 whether they were scoring or not.

At this level, with these players and their precision, exposing that much of the goal from that distance is approaching a tap in level of mistake. Fernandes hasn’t hit that with anything like his max power which makes the precision piece so much easier. I don’t think it’s worth sugarcoating it. It was a bad error.

And I’ll whisper it but the Ugarte goal wasn’t exactly unstoppable or in the corner either.

Are we really still debating whether Pickford is a top goalkeeper?

And whether we should be happy we have him even though he's not prime Peter Schmeichel?
Where’s the top keeper line drawn at?

I’m just curious when people say this how many other guys get into the group. There are really only 20 to 25 guys that matter so how many can really be better before the top guy line doesn’t really apply?

I'd draw it somewhere where a guy is deserving of playing in Europe. So is he a Top 6 or 7ish keeper in the league.

And given his performances for us in relegation battles and his performances for England on the international stage, he certainly qualifies

I agree with your sentiment, but I have to say both goals were hit with a lot of power

Sure but if he’s 6th that’s not the top quarter of the league. I’d put that down as a fine player.

I was thinking about this the other day. who would you rather have in the prem a head of him possibly Martinez at villa but he has a few gaffs. Pickford is never injured like Allison. I personally think he is the best in the prem.
