Yeah, In 2000, they finished 5th but won the CL.

If I remember correctly, UEFA used to let the individual national football associations decide how they wanted their alloted number of teams to go into the CL.
The Spanish FA waited till the end of the season in 2000, because they knew Madrid could win the CL despite having a poor season.
Whereas the Premier league jumped the gun and submitted the top 4 for entry before the season was over because they didn't expect a) Everton to hold on to a top 4 spot or b) the rs to fluke the CL.
