Not entirely sure what to make of that interview. Thought he spoke quite well generally. There was a little too much going round in circles trying to explain the restrictions of recent years.

He said we could "attack" the summer market which is good to hear and right towards the end uses the phrase "conservatively strategic" to describe the approach that would be taken.

It will all come down to where we stand squad wise when the window is shut. We certainly need to be strategic and that's a word also used by TFG but we can't really be conservative. This summer they have to push the margins as much as restrictions allow. We need to begin the process of recovery and catch-up and the correction of years of under-investment, that cannot be conservative.

I guess though he is just allowing some legroom there and not trying to get expectations up too much. Evolution and not revolution he also said.

Fair enough but things must look a lot better by the end of the summer.

They also need to get a stadium naming rights deal over the line and announced. That is going to be a critical component of making us more competitive. We need to hear something about that soon, with the test event next Monday.
I speak from a position of relative uncertainty here, as I don't fully understand how the new PSR rules will apply on the 3 year rolling periods they've been previously using, given there's a new formula from next season.

Anyway, the point here being is that I took Thelwell to mean that we couldn't splurge outrageously this summer at the expense of future windows too, hence his "evolution not revolution" comment.

I think it's sensible and understandable - we want to be competitive in the future. Rather than sign 12 players this summer, I'd rather retain a few like Gueye, Keane etc for a year if it means we sign half a dozen or so, minimise the upheaval and ensure we can spend similarly again the following year.

Loan market will also be something we look at I'd guess.

He does hunt v strongly that this will be a big summer, but I think there's a difference between "big" and an entire squad overhaul in one window which some people might think we can do.

Really thought TFG would bring in their own fella as DoF but definitely looks like he’s staying on after that interview. He’s done an alright job in trying circumstances to be fair so intrigued to see what he’ll do with a bit more money (hopefully more Ndiayes than Maupays!)

Be a massive stitch up job now unless he stays after that mate, he spoke with confidence about forward planning and his role in the strategy.

The club don’t release that unless he’s staying.

Mixed feelings on it, I’d have respect for the work done in the adversity and limits he’d worked in comparatively to the job done. I’ve no beef with him.

But from a cold nosed business point of view, is he the best DOF we can employ and attract from June onwards? Thats the question for TFG.

Maybe he is…….

Not his biggest fan.
But some continuity is no bad thing.
TFG must think he's done ok and we need stability.
Presumably they're already working on target list and don't want to start again with new DOF.

Nothing surprises anymore.

TFG were happy for Dyche to continue. It was Dyche himself who declared he can't get a tune out of them.

Same for Big Nose Kev. They seem happy with his performance and dealings. Shame, needs a clear out and some signs of ambition not Kev from Wolverhampton.

I think he will be a valuable asset to Moyes because he is mainly a academy manager than First Team Director of Football.

I think we need to improve our scouting network which Moyes used exclusively at Everton and allow Thetwell to work on:
Playing structure
Data analysis
Medical
Contracts

This frees up Moyes and the Scouting Team to pinpoint the transfer targets

Like most, I enjoy taking the Micheal out of him due to his conk, history of Big Red and now the worst combover since the Hamlet Ads. However being objective, on balance I do find it difficult to criticise the job he’s done.
Balanced the books in difficult circumstances.
Got top dollar for academy players who on reflection look unlikely to have made it.
Recruitment on the whole seems to have been acceptable in the circumstances.
I can’t really comment of the youth set up as I’m not well informed on it, but there does seem to be some hope with the U18 squad coming through.

So basically well done I reckon, you big nosed kopite baldie.

Moyes praising him in a recent presser was telling too IMO

It's a valid question, but should be raised that it's equally important that it has to be someone who either knows the market or has an understanding of where we are in it. We have that in both him and Moyes, so I suppose it'd make for an, as he put it, "evolution, not revolution".

We should have money to spend obviously but someone who doesn't understand our situation fully might eff it up very easily and bring us back into trouble.

He deserves a fair crack now we’re coming out of a long dark tunnel. Anyone who says he doesn’t clearly have an agenda.

If you mean an agenda to want better, then yes I have an agenda.

IF he's kept on and given a new deal (though I don't see why that wouldn't have been announced already if that was the case), then he'll have the chance this summer to show his worth and talent won't he and we'll all be delighted if that's the case and he shows himself as a shrewd operator when he has money behind him.
