I really hope Thelwell isn't cockteasing us with these latest comments as he's basically said we're in a position this summer to invest heavily in a large number of players and bring in a much higher calibre of player than we previously could.

With loans ending and obscenely high contracts expiring, we're set to lose literally half the current squad. There clearly needs to be as big a turnover of playing staff as you're ever likely to see.

Yes, and that's consistent with what has been reported in the more reliable press

He did say "evolution, not revolution" though - so I wouldn't expect a dozen new faces this summer

I think that there's a chance the likes of Gana, Begovic, Virginia and even Keane get new deals. Maybe even Doucoure too 🤢 because even if we did that, you're still going to need 6 or 7 new players. I sort of get it, there's only so much overhaul that's sensible in one window and doing deals for that many players might stretch us financially (we have no idea what sort of money we are going to be able to spend).

They need to retain a good few of the out of contract players.

Then there is more money for other players. Just push them down the pecking order so they play less. However poor Doucs/Keane/DCL are in some minds they are expensive to replace. It would be better to keep them then add players on top.

Obviously I'd still expect us to lean on multiple loans, but we're needing to bring in about 4 or 5 starting XI players minimum and the same number of squad players.
Agree. 5 starters needed....2 full backs, centre mid , wide right and striker .

Squad fillers ....centre half , centre mid , a player who can play either flank and back up keeper.

That assumes that we don't sell Branthwaite , retain Gana and let every other ooc player go

They’d have to take big pay cuts though. It’s not sensible financial planning offering Keane and Doucoure anything like they’re on now.

That will be one sign that the new owners mean business - if they offer lesser deals to lesser talents.

Get Gana another year, maybe Doucs too. Not Keane though..

5 permanent signings with 2 or 3 loan deals,Branthwaite moving on, is what I expect tbh.

Nobody really wants Keane or Doucoure here. The way I look at it though - we have loads and loads of work to do this summer. If the size of the task is an issue in itself, then I could live with another year of Michael Keane as 4th choice centre back I suppose. Same goes for Doucour (although it sticks in my throat a bit). For very reduced salaries, on one year deals, I could live with it as long as they are very much relegated to 4th choice etc

Loans were key for our first team this season before injury to Mangala and Lindstrom is doing a job. We can use loans again to stagger how much we need to pay whilst still injecting quality.

In my opinion, the hard money needs to be on a right winger, a striker and a CB. Full backs feel like a position that smart loans and free transfers can sort in the short term but in a way that makes sense.

Midfield loans like a Bove instantly come in and add something. Gana and Garner are my immediate midfielder priorities - got to get them tied down.

You’re right with taking advantage of the Roma link, any one of those 3 can contribute.
If we don't sign some permanent full backs, I swear to God I am going to riot. At the weekend we played a 6'3" centre half at right back and a near 40 year old right winger at left back, and that's pretty standard for us these days. No more messing about at fullback, ffs.
