6 to 9, depending on what happens with some contract situations

I hate what I'm about to do, because I firmly believe the type of people who do this usually need their hard drives checking, but...

GK - Pickford, ?, ? - May need up to two new signings here as both our 2nd and 3rd choice keepers are out of contract)
RB - Patterson, ? - Will need a right back as both Coleman and Young are out of contract and shouldn't be offered new deals, plus doubts about Patterson's level
LB - Mykolenko, ? - Will need a left back as we only have one at the club
CB - Tarkowski, Branthwaite, O'Brien, ? - May need another centre back if Keane isn't offered a new deal (which should only be on v reduced terms)
CM - Garner, Iroegbunum, Gueye(?), ? - Mangala's injury probably rules him out as a signing, but we will need at least one centre mid - two if Gana leaves
AM - Alcaraz(?), ? - You'd think it's unlikely that we offer Doucoure a new deal at least on his current terms, we may make Alcaraz permanent but possibly need another, but maybe we'll see N'Diaye and McNeil as viable options behind Alcaraz as the number 10?
Winger - N'Diaye, McNeil, ?, ? - Lindstrom and Harrison loans ending - we will need a couple of wide players here
Striker - Chermiti, ?, ? - DCL out of contract, Broja's loan ends and hard to think we won't sell Beto. We are going to need a couple of strikers.

That's potentially as many as 12

Realistically I could see one of our keepers staying, so us needing one there. I could even maybe see Keane getting a year on reduced terms unless he wants to go and play elsewhere. Think Gana will stay.

If you pressed me for a number I'd go 8, maybe 9 tops.

Pretty scary isn't it when you start breaking it down....

Need at least 8 new players and possibly as many as 12. We need to be bold, the opportunity to completely rebuild in the days of PSR don’t come around very often and we are fortunate that multiple high earning and largely underperforming players are out of contract. The only one I’d be tempted on retaining is Gueye, but if he isn’t willing to sign for just a year on similar terms then I’d be moving him on as well. We need to be dictating things from now on, rather than let players continuously take us for a ride.

Calvert-Lewin, Doucoure and Keane should all be fired out of a cannon and Coleman and Young should both be told to retire. Alcaraz is the only loanee who I think will be retained which means another 4 players out the door on top. Added to that are the uncertain futures surrounding Patterson and Beto, who as much as I like needs a big end to the season to justify keeping, even as a squad option.

Thelwell’s contractual situation confuses things further, and a decision over whether he stays on needs to be made imminently. We need a clear focus, and if the club decide not to retain him then I’d much rather let Moyes get on with the summer planning rather than recruiting a new DoF which would delay everything further as they’d naturally want input.

The importance of this summer can’t be understated and we simply have to get it right.

Surely we need a quality upgrade and a bit more depth. Can't see many players of the current squad that we should go on with apart from Gana and Begovic as 3rd keeper.

Feel like Branthwaite will leave for giving us additional money, we'll need a good mix between good invested money like Ndiaye, free transfers and loans. Can see 100-150m feasible.
All depends on if anyone comes in for him. We'd want £70m+ for him and not many clubs will pay that, maybe City but they've just signed a CB for a lot of money.

Rebuilding too extensively would be a mistake, in my opinion. We need to build on the foundation we have and add some quality. The defensive unit is already very robust.

Fling too many players in at one time and it will be too much to integrate.

Well Kev in his interview said it'll be an evolution and not a revolution so I'd expect him to get about 3 players over the line in the 3 months available to him and we'll be left short for about the 32nd season.
Realistically, how many players do we need? We won’t be in Europe, so the squad shouldn’t be stretched.

Think this is where we're at come Summer with the assumption Alcaraz triggers and none of the OOC are offered a new deal (they will):

I don't think we can fix a whole squad in one window so loan slots need maxing out for once and I think some positions can be covered around the squad like JOB at right-back, Alcaraz in midifeld, McNeil CAM and wings etc. From the youth team I'm promoting Armstrong but aside from that I can't see anyone else unless in pre-season the likes of Benjamin, Thomas or JBC are given a test.

We need top quality first choice:

Left-Back
Right-Back
Right Wing
Striker

We also need:

Back-up Keeper (Personally I'd just try keep Virginia)
Cover at CB
Cover in CM (Would try get one and keep Gana for a year)
Winger that can cover both sides.

With these new rules, can clubs spend anything they want pretty much now, as long as they stay within range with the new wage rule?

I don’t think we will be renewing Douc’s , Keane’s , Coleman’s or Young’s contracts .
I certainly hope we don’t sign Broja or Harrison after their loan spells end . I don’t think they will keep Lindstrom either .
We could keep hold of Mangala and Alcaraz . I think DCL will leave too .

That’s a lot of players that may leave so I’m think Kev’s suggestion that it will be more of an evolution than revolution is a tad optimistic.

I think Lindstrøm stays. Looks a Moyes type of player.

I really hope Thelwell isn't cockteasing us with these latest comments as he's basically said we're in a position this summer to invest heavily in a large number of players and bring in a much higher calibre of player than we previously could.

With loans ending and obscenely high earners' contracts expiring, we're set to lose literally half the current squad. There clearly needs to be as big a turnover of playing staff as you're ever likely to see.

Obviously I'd still expect us to lean on multiple loans, but we're needing to bring in about 4 or 5 starting XI players minimum and the same number of squad players.

I hope he proves his worth for next few months as he does look a good player but he has to provide a few more attacking contributions to make it worthwhile especially as I’m sure Moyes is looking for a few more wingers in the summer.
