Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

Now that it's already very late in the window, I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow's result has an impact on our deadline day spending

I think we need players regardless, but I wouldn't be surprised if a loss increases our urgency to possibly spend a little bit more. Whereas if we can get 3 points, maybe we might just go for 1 player and try to preserve budget for the summer.

Not sure I would agree with a strategy like that, but I could see tomorrow factoring into how we go about the last 2 or 3 days.
Understand this, but I hope not.

if we win tomorrow we jump up to 15th spot, 1 point behind Palace and Wham, 3 points behind Utd and only 5 points behind Brentford (all on same number of games).

Possibly a long-shot but if we can strengthen (with the right people) and push on the remainder of the season there is no reason why we cannot aim for mid-table getting us up 4-5 places and securing extra prize money. Plus the factor that this will give us again to strengthen in January!

So if Ferguson follows Onana’s example, and chooses Everton over West Ham, it’s actually because he’s only ever been West Ham’s third choice of strikers that they probably won’t even sign, and not because the player views Everton as the better destination… gotcha!

People really need to stop pretending that Everton are the ugliest bloke on the dance floor when it’s just not true!

Our own manager turned down an extension at West Ham less than a year ago, and has now returned to Everton, which he couldn’t do quick enough!

West Ham have since sacked Moyes replacement less than six months into his new job, and they sit a whopping four points above ugly old Everton having played a game more.
You say ugly, I say ruggedly handsome.

I don't think our past is any barrier to our attractiveness as a club for players.

It's where a club is going rather than where it's been that counts.

Our league position is going to discount some players in the short term, as will finances, but no other club can offer such a mix of historic old and shiny new like we can at present.

Things like the new stadium are probably overestimated as an attraction to players - but even so it's certainly not something that going to harm our prospects either in their eyes. It's still a plus point.

I would never think that, other things being equal, we are in any way less of an attraction for players than West Ham.

If we have "rivals" that we might expect to compete with for players, then I'd point to Spurs - they are no better than us and that's irrespective of their current position.

I'd certainly see us as a better destination than maybe 10 of the other 19 clubs.

It’s more stupid doing a Tosun and Walcott window mate,

Unless we get better than we have, we should do nothing IMO.

At the time I felt both weren't wise transfers, for this reason;

If Tosun comes in, we still need a top striker - he doesn't have the credentials for that fee and we're not that desperate - we'll finish 7th-9th this season with or without him.
I just hope Tosun/Walcott are Walsh signings. We shouldn't give Allardyce a penny in my view.

So I get the logic.

But we're in a totally different situation now, relegation is a threat and our squad depth is paper thin as a direct consequence of no net iunvestment in the team for many years now. It would be one almighty gamble to think we can see this season out.

To cherry pick a few bad signings as justification as to why we shouldn't sign anyone this window is wrong. We have a manager who is telling everyone we need players, and we do. It needs to happen.
