2024/25 David Moyes

Wonder if were getting a bit bogged down in his tendancy to play down expectations last time? Personally I always thought he did this because even our best teams in his previous era tended to do better with less pressure. There's plenty of other successful managers taken a similar approach over the years. We got better results when the team felt they were under dogs.

Now you could say that his failing was recruiting a team of players who couldn't handle pressure. That might be fair. But was that characteristic a symptom of the fact we were actively trying to recruit players who were under rated by the sky 4 (at the time) or who had slipped through the net somewhere else? Is a whole squad full of over looked, under rated gems with a rock solid John Terry sized winners egos a realistic expectation? We had some winners, but there were others in the squad who were excellent players who tended to choke or lose belief in the biggest moments.

Could he not just have been saying what he thought would get us the best results?
That’s one way of looking at it.

But, and this is a but almost as big as James Beattie’s, with a club with the history and success of ours, you’ve also got to be talking about the success for the future, aiming high and all that.

Our motto literally says ‘nothing but the best is good enough’ so you can’t expect fans to back you if you’re telling the world we’re crap and will say crap forever because the Sky Six have got it all down up.

We founded both the footie league and the prem, and we’ve earned more points than any other club ever, so we’re not some Leicester or West Ham you can talk down to.

Play down the expectations for an individual game, fine. Play down expectations for long term success and you can do one.

I’m hoping that’s one of things Moyes might have learnt in his time away, particularly that we’ve now got richer owners and a new stadium waiting for us.

Hunter is by far the most balanced and insightful Everton reporter.

He also colours his pieces with a hint of opinion, rather than hiding behind "there is a feeling", "there is a sense", or "sources close to Phil Neville said..."
Maybe but I didn't see that in this particular piece mate

I'll just keep it simple and go with a) league positions.
Interesting that, so Moyes took over from Smith when we were in bother, finished 15th then 7th = ave 11th.
Ancelotti took over from Silva (iirc) when we were in bother and finished 12th then 10th = ave 11th
🤷‍♂️
But Ancelotti got more PPG.

You prefer Moyes I preferred Ancelotti, best to leave it there before I get MMV I reckon 👍

He’s got a point tho we aren’t scoring goals and Moyes is working with the same players unless we make major changes. As he said he’s watched us as have we it’s been awful.
Forrest we’re nearly relegated last season, and now there challenging for a CL place with the same players.

Only flicked through last few pages to get a general view. Interesting.
Dont really know where the new owners could go halfway through the season tbh.
If dyche hadnt been so atrocious this thread wouldnt even exist. But he was. And he was taking us to the championship.
Moyes still might but i think we've a better chance of staying up at least. A few names ive seen mentioned were bigger gambles than Moyes imo in terms of relegation.
Same drill. By hook or by crook stay up.
All pro Moyes for me for the next 5 months. Its gotta be.

He said those things because he's a safety first manager who struggles to take the handbrake off his teams. That probably suits our current squad, and probably won't change for at least the next couple of years, so hopefully progress can be made during his contract term.

That’s how I took it at the time, and since. Just part of the psychological gamesmanship and looking for any advantage he could use. When Mourinho did stuff like that he was a genius. Moyes did it and he’s insulting the fans and accepting mediocrity? Not for me

Quotes from the man himself.
"I'm from a city not unlike this, brought up with Glasgow Celtic and Rangers, and I'm joining the people's football club in Liverpool. The majority of people you meet on the street are Everton fans and I hope to give those fans something to be proud of.
"I'm under no illusions. You don't get jobs in football management when they're easy and this is a big task, but I'm really positive about it. I've got great belief in what can be achieved here."
