Look at where we were before he came, and look at where we are now.

We now have a better squad, we spend less on wages, the signings we've made since he joined have more hits than misses, we've been in profit every year (in terms of transfers at least), the Academy is showing a financial return via sales and we are performing better in the league. He doesn't panic buy either, which is of course one of the things that wasted so much money since Moshiri took over.

I don't know what else people want from a DoF in the situation we were (and are) in, but I don't think anyone could have done better than he has in that situation.

He has navigated us through a very tricky spell, but that's not going to be what the Friedkins judge him on. I expect they will want their own people in making the decisions. I'm sure Kev would do a decent job under the different circumstances of new ownership and increased revenue from the new stadium, but he could just be tarred with the failures of the past. It really depends on the level of clear out that the Friedkins want to do, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him being collateral damage.

With new owners, the job description has changed. If we advertise the job tomorrow, it would be an incredible coincidence if out of all the directors of football in the world, Kevin Thelwell was the best man for the job.

It's time for ambition now - not making do.

What does ambition look like, though?

If we are going to have a DoF I want one that buys cheap and sells for more than he paid; I want one that encourages players to develop here, sells when it’s right for the club and reinvests that in better players to start the process again. I want one that backs himself and his plan rather than bed-wetting.

I think Thelwell deserves a shot to do that after the takeover. Since he arrived we have been much better run than we were before he arrived.

I personally think there's a decent chance Dyche stays in post until such point as he's got us a few games adrift in the bottom three. Obviously we lose the next three and take a heck of a hammering on goal difference, but as long as we beat Southampton we probably won't enter the new year in the relegation zone.

Clearly that's nowhere near good enough though and it would be an utterly terrible way for the new owners to start their tenure at the club.

I wouldn't say he deserves a chance or doesn't deserve one to be honest, it depends what he's bringing to the role and whether that lines up with what the new owners want from somebody in that job. I think he appears to have done a relatively solid job as a firefighter in difficult circumstances in much the same way as Dyche and Colin Chong have, but if what we're going to ask of him changes then I want them to be confident he is capable of adapting to that and not just keeping him on because they think it's 'fair' or 'he deserves a chance'. I have no aversion to him staying but only if it's because we think he's the best man for the job.

I really rate him and the job he's had to do here.

The question mark is for me at least - is he a DoF who can excel in these circumstances but without severe restrictions would struggle.

Almost like is he the equivalent of a Allardyce, Dyche good in adversity, but that's their limit

I don't disagree with your wishes. I just don't agree that Thelwell is any different to Dyche. He was brought in during a crisis. He did a job. That job, however, is about to fundamentally change. True, we have been much better run than we were under Marcel Brands - another fella we were assured was worthy of his position while the evidence that he was either powerless or incompetent stacked up in Alex Iwobi-sized instalments. Sean Dyche has managed us better than his predecessor too - but few are calling for his continued employment.

The pathetically low standards we accepted in the past should no longer be the hurdles by which we judge our officials in the future. For that reason - and to change the dead-hand culture that grips this club - we need to start afresh. Ambition, to answer your question, is to get the best available man or woman in each critical position of this club. Therefore, advertise both the manager's and the director of football's jobs and let's see where Thelwell fits in to the pecking order. As I said, it would be a remarkable coincidence if out of all the available directors of football in the world game, Kevin Thelwell was the best man for this significant role.
