Gibbo

When Phil Neville was a better player (stay with me here!), there was a stat going round, where we won a far higher % of our games when he was in the lineup. Sometimes it's not all technical ability, just the balance of the team.

I was thinking the same thing about him.

I like gibbo like i like distain. just seems like a boulder that dandies don't want to try to go by. i don't need him to score, just be like jonny in the midfield.

I saw what he did today.

Does all the ugly stuff. Was brilliant.

So important. He's not a world beater but until we can upgrade him he'll do.

There are still people waiting for upgrades to Osman and Hibbert apparently so my guess is that there will be no upgrade at that position.

For the money we paid he is an absolute bargain. He complements fellaini perfectly in midfield and can shoot and pick out a great forward pass. Whats not to like about him, yes, there are better players out there but i am more than happy to have him in the first 11

He gives us presence and balance and other intangible stuff the empiricists will have to learn to appreciate.

It could all be coincidence, I suppose, but when he's in the team > we do well. It's time to stop the deep analysis about what his failings are until that fact changes.

Already one of the first names on the team sheet for me. He's the first proper center mid we've had for years, really, and it does wonders for the shape of the side. I can see him getting a decent haul of goals over a full season if he's starting the majority of games and though he doesn't always pull them off he has a better eye for a through ball than anyone else in the side.

This from someone who was embarressed to be receiving texts from RS mates saying we'd signed him in January. Moyes is a confounding manager some times, but he's displayed his admirable frugality and eye for a player again with Gibson.

Edit:

He plays centrally instead of defensively and that means the whole play moves up ten yards all over the pitch and allows us to press teams. With the Rodwell and Fellaini combo, they both end up playing on top of their own centre halves...

And to illustrate this point OptaJoe just tweeted the following:

'80% - Everton attempted a higher proportion of their passes in the opposition half of any team in the Premier League today. Advanced.'

Followed by...

'51% - Swansea City attempted a lower proportion of passes in the opposition half of any team in the Premier League today. Pressed.'

That wasn't all because of Gibson of course and as was pointed out in the week Swansea's center halves and center mids have hard ons for eachother when it comes to passing, but he's a contributing factor.

What's an understatement ? He's a pretty bog standard PL midfielder really. He's never going to be top drawer.

He's twice or three times more influential than Rodwell. At least his gets stuck in, looks to play the ball forward and has composure. He is what he is...a steadying role in midfield, good positional sense, a good pass and a cracking shot. True, he is no world beater, but if having him in there allows Felli to become the world beater he keeps threatening to be, then it's really good balance.

Scott Parker is no world beater either, but spurs are a much better team when he is playing.

yup. loads have noticed that the rodderer gets in fellainis way. i like the gibboman, he makes for a nice everton player

I like Gibbo a lot.

Worth mentioning that cracking shot yesterday, I think that might have beaten lots of keepers but Vorm is top quality.

I have said he is a great player for us since his first few games, he breaks up the play very well and protects the back four, he passes the ball around well, he can knock a good through ball for people aswell, i just think we look a lot more solid when he is playing.
