Defend what, exactly?

If it's the dividends, what's your problem with dividends? If you have a pension plan, then you are a shareholder in these type of privatised companies. Most of us are the shareholders and we all benefit from the profits and dividends. They contribute towards our retirements.

Without these dividends, expect a fall in living standards during retirement.

I've got poison coming out of the tap, but it's ok, free market capitalism means I've a few quid to spend because I have a pension so I can at least afford the medicine to help me recover from having drank liquid excrement. Hoorah for the stock market!

I have no problem with companies that are successful paying dividends . I’m not deluded , companies performing well have every right to do that . If however your find for pumping sewage into water , then responsible shortly afterwards for a similar parasitic outbreak making it undrinkable without boiling whilst also demanding a 91% increase in customers bills to keep the company afloat then maybe read the room and not increase your dividends to £127m .

It wasn’t safe though was it ? Hence them being told to boil it and people being ill. The amount of raw sewage emptied into uk waterways doubled in 2023. Just short of 600,000 instances of raw sewage discharges and 75% of UK waterways present a serious risk to human health .

The UK has performed poorly in bathing water quality for years, regularly appearing near the bottom of the table while other countries, including eastern European states, have made marked improvements.
