Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Good morning all. My son's surgery has been cancelled. His biopsy came back and the cancer has spread to his lymph nodes. So he now has an appointment on Thursday to discuss a different surgery whereby they do the foot operation and also remove his lymph nodes. Hopefully when he has the meeting on Thursday he will get a date for that operation. I've told him that he is on a different path to recovery to the previous one but it will be OK in the end. Still very worrying though.
Anyway to change the subject all I know about electric cars is that they are rubbish in cold weather. I've heard stories of only getting 30 miles on one charge. As you know Mr F and I love going to Scotland. I've wondered on our last couple of trips that if we were up in the Highlands in an electric car how would we charge it without having to drive miles to find a charging point.
Disappointing news for your son and you. He is in the right hands now and soon on the right treatment path. Stay strong for each other and this will soon be all behind you.

So sorry for your son anj, can't imagine what he's going through and to have an op cancelled must be hard.

I have just had a message off my sister and after my dad's latest fall which ended him in hospital, has finally been accepted into 24hr care. I am not fond of my father but what he was living like was cruel, so this is a weight off everyone's' shoulders. they won't have to find him sat in his own faeces anymore and confused to buggery.

Is @Barnfred 55 ok or is he off galivanting again?

Sorry to hear that Anj, truly terrible news. Fingers crossed everything is OK in the end, as you say!

I don't know about that, the first ones maybe, but I drove one for a day or so during the -15-20C snowstorms we had recently - it did drain slightly quicker but it's not like the 250km range drained to 0 in an hour. It is generally the same for petrol/diesel anyway while they warm up too tbh. Plus Norwegians have a lot of EVs and live in much harsher weather conditions, so...

Charging might be a problem, but the highlands have some* friendly folk willing to lend an outlet/socket at a shop or something, no doubt.

* only "some" as I have visited Uist quite a lot and I've always been looked at as a bloody foreigner and people instantly default to gaelic to talk about me behind my back and I had someone who could translate a fair bit lol

I just checked and it looks like the nearest charging point to me is 13 miles away. Not the most convenient unless of course you have a port at home.

Is there a reason why EV’s don’t hold second hand value?
A company put the first forecourt of electric point chargers like petrol deil style ones now - he had a big shop set up like the motorways do it looked fantastic - then he got asked why was it on
a A road & not. Motorway ?

He asked the reporter to walk up a set of ladders he had nearby - 2 acres of electric substations near
By over the fence to supply the electric to his pumps the cost of the land the set up he told him was affordable on a A road structue - & it would be ages before he broke even plus the people were waiting 2-3 hours to fuel up with electric while they sat having an expensive meal & tea or coffee etc ...IMO electric cars are & will be a white elephant hydrogen engines are not being backed as the engines last forever ....& are easier to refuel ?

Sorry to hear about your sons problems. I hope everything gets sorted soon. Stay strong. 💪💙
Feels like the UK's shafted by the electricity prices currently
Shocking that.
Although if the wording was deliberate you really are a bright spark.:D

That's disgusting your poor son & family my heart goes out to you - I know what It's like to wait for biopsies twice this & last year I waited for an age for results for 12 biopsies luckily they were all negative so if they had been positive i guess I never would have known the wait for a procedure - It's a worry & my sympathy goes out to your family & son -

As for Electric cars - they will be the biggest con of the century in the future when I'm dead & gone .... A German company has invented a fantastic hydrogen car without any subsidies from any EU country, they simply can't get the investment from any government - easy to fill up at a pump & the engines last forever & obviously the fuel is so cheap & the engines need no maintenance last forever ... No government wants that on a mass scale ....

I wonder why all countries have gone down the stupid electric route & it's not really green .... where are the huge dud Batteries dumped in lakes in Africa?

So very very sorry to read this Anj. Hope that something can be sorted and soon.💙

Well, what a dumbass I am. I have just spent the last 5 minutes trying to fix a surround sound speaker as there was no music coming out, I moved to a different speaker and it was quiet, I then realised I wasn't using the surround sound lol I am using the sound bar. Doh lol
You are a pup ,I do that every day !
Well done with your session T I am sure it will help the therapist to see you in a different mood ,gives her another point of reference . Hope you gave yourself anoter tick .

To be honest, the first part is partially true - the upfront cost is what's the biggest barrier.

I obviously don't know the situation with chargers in the UK currently, but even for us here in Bulgaria there's quite a lot - I have friends/acquaintances that have been driving electric for ages and go all over the place with no problems. For us every bigger Kaufland/LIDL/Billa parking lot has a few of those, a lot of petrol stations along highways and main roads have started putting a few columns/ports, Metro (Costco for Europe) all have a few everywhere, so it's getting there slowly. We have a hired car service that you can reserve/pay/use via a phone app and it's entirely an electric vehicle fleet, have faced no issues with them and finding chargers, we've used them to go on bigger trips when my old car was in the shop too with no public-charge-related issues.

The problem still remains that a new EV of moderate quality and with the bigger range (400km+) costs between €60-85k, which is ridiculous and depreciates quickly.

If they manage to reach a normal price compared to petrol/diesel engines there would be absolutely no competition and we'll see how fast the infrastructure for charging will be brought up, as it's not a difficult or too time consuming transition.

Then there's the battery issue and lithium mining, but recent developments have been made to make lithium from salt water more efficiently, which would technically be a close to infinite amount of it to meet our needs.
Watch @Terrarian 's video to see what this extracting from salt water entails and it's knock on effect !

Anyway, to steer (haha) away from the topic of electric cars - I'm getting married next Friday! We're doing a signing and gathering with friends only, a proper church wedding with all the bells and whistles is in the plan for next year on the same date as it's more difficult to organise due to parents, etc.
Good luck ,can I give you a tip ? Blame all your misunderstandings on the nuances of translation and idioms ,it is like having someone else to blame .

According to my research the "average" cost per mile for a typical EV was .06 o per mile and .36p per mile for non EV.

However with a decent home charging pad costing around £1200 ( you can get cheaper but then increase the charging time) and increased acquisition cost you are going to have to do a lot of miles to recoup the difference.
I watched a video saying that in some countries with the differering rates for electricity and fossil fuels you will never get the difference back .I think they cited India as the biggest along with the reliability of power in other places .
