Two modern howlers:

Getting into the Champions League and deciding it was time to buy Per Kroldrup, Simon Davies and Andy Van Der Meyde.

The FA Cup Final, had we won it would Lescott have stayed? Regardless of how much we got for him (which was again spent badly) it took us a long time to get over him.
In short: No.

In long: Nik's nonononononono cat.

The thing with blaming the european ban though is ALL english teams were banned and they still managed to do ok. The biggest issue is the mismanagement of the club at board room level in the 80s and 90s, while other teams such as united seen how football was changing and modernized themselves to take advantage, we never. We never updated the ground and we never capitalised on the commercialization of football in the 90s. However, I believe the biggest turning point was in fact in 1977 when John Moores completely resigned from the board of directors. John Moores was a business visionary and if he would have had the health to continue in charge we may have moved forward. Unfortunately we were left with a board of directors who could not see how the world of football was changing and did not move with the times. The littlewoods empire was built on seeing someone do something and then doing it better, seeing potential in something and predicting the market and it was how he ran Everton football club, he didnt accept second best...unfortunately the people who followed him have.

sadly the rot had well and truly set in long long before any of this, the champions league year just papered over the cracks for a short while. We have not looked like a club who could sustain a decent challenge in the league for over 20 years,,, depressing as this is it's the sad reality.

The thing is, they had less to lose.

United's players didn't leave for European football because they wouldn't be getting it anyway. Same with Liverpool, Tottenham etc.

But the rest of your post is a very good point.

Ken****e et all shouldve sold up after that. Even though we lost, it was free advertising to sell.

Kenwright isnt the reason for all our problems you know. The rot start well before Kenwright, in fact the rot was already in place when we winning **** in the 80s...see my earlier post for reasons why

Neil Mcdonald,Stuart Mccall,Pat Nevin and Tony Cottee simply were not good enough!

They weren't bad, like. Ironically, one of our big mistakes was "learning" from the Sh*te and going for continuity by appointing Colin Harvey as manager. Fabulous coach / second in command - never a leader. Should have got Bobby Robson.

i was devastated when we sold stuart mcall, i thouight he was an outstanding battler and leader in the middle of the park,, i also hearted his chest and volley in the cup final. The team started to fall apart after he left.

You've got a point. I was just going off the previous point about the FA cup is all

Agreed. The copycat business was Carter's mistake. Bobby Robson was England manager at the time though and wouldn't have left. He turned us down in 1978 when Billy Bingham went, and was again coveted by Johnson in the summer of 1997 before HK Mk 3.
