Summer transfer window 2023

I'd not sign Coady, I'd sell whichever of Keane or Holgate I can dump on someone the fastest and I'd bring Branthwaite back in. Sorted for a year. And then next summer the other of the crap ones goes along with Tarkowski and we sign someone to play CB that can actually run and proactively stop attacks.
Well I would sell Holgate, Keane and Godfrey and buy Coady.

But I realise thats slighly unrealistic.

Wouldn’t agree with that take at all to be honest.
To make him competent you have to structure your whole backline to protect what he can't do. That's what made it work at Wolves. He's not good enough to do that.

I guess the better way to put it is making him a regular starter at this level would be a mistake for whoever is doing it. Someone might because football clubs always outdo themselves with bad decisions.

That’s very true of many defenders in the league really though mate, they all have flaws and limits - many can’t even defend - hello TAA.

All that said, I’m not sure it’s impossible that we could play three centre backs with wingbacks and Coady is ideal for it - depends how the manager wants to progress.
This is a key point for me. He has made a few hints over recent weeks that no matter what the circumstances where he wanted to change the squad and the culture within it over the summer. A number of other teams do go with 3 at the back and we should have a plan A and a plan B so it's possible certainly with Branthwaite coming back in who has pace about him to add to the backline.

You just said we wouldnt get much for Holgate, Godfrey and Keane.

So what would you do?
Open ended questions linger with how large our budget is entering the window. Clearly there our other areas to address first. That said I do think you have to look in the market for another CB. Branthwaite's loan should warrant a good squad player add with the possibility of surpassing that. Tark is a projectable starter for at least next year and hopefully a season after at his current level. But otherwise its worth noting all of Godfrey, Holgate and Keane are on two years. We should astutely stagger those expirations with an addition assuming none of them really garner a return and at least 2/3rds will probably just expire off the books.

I think we could find another decent add at our under 15 million. For depth purposes and to juxtapose the age of that backline it would be nice to have another under 23 addition with Branthwaite to be a plausible starter a year or two from now. As come 24/25 the cupboards at the position get drained, with no viability of returns and Tark will likely be showing cracks just exiting his prime.

Shocked if maupay will be still here if he cant get a game when we dont have a cf and need win the game. Then he never will, we will loose money on him but hopefully get 10 mill maybe
Just to be clear: we will not start next season with an entirely new team. Strengthening what we have in key positions means that some players who are getting a slagging on here can be used to their best advantage and even progress. This includes the likes of Iwobi and, yes I'll say it, Maupay

Alexander-Arnold is worth doing it for because he provides double digit assists

As I say, it’s the trade off.

It comes down to is the juice worth the squeeze. All defenders have limits and enabling facets.

If Coady was at say Leeds or Leicester they woukd have had a much better chance of staying up.

One of the cleverest signings in Jan was Craig Dawson at Wolves - he has limits but a massive influence in keeping them up, you look at someone like Dan Burn as well, huge limits but pivotal for Newcastle.

Im not oppose but we need a change at LB if thats going to happen. I think for our price range it's one of the positions with the most interesting options in Europe. Few names on a little research worth circling would be Fabiano Parisi, Milos Kerkez and Björn Meijer. But Myko needs to likely transition to a squad role if that change becomes the default.

Nah mate can't agree with that. Leeds have bad defenders too but Coady in space is game over for them.
