To be fair Martinez had lost the plot and its easy to look back with rose tinted glasses. He was getting worse season after season and look at the team we had then compared to the team we have now. Chalk and cheese. That was a top 6 or 7 squad and he had us around 12th to 11th and getting worse. I agree Moshiri has made plenty of mistakes but getting shot of bobby brown shoes was not one of them.

We lost the plot when we sold Lukaku and brought about million slow paced no 10's and have never recovered from that.
...which he took to 5th place.

I think the march of time has told us that we were never ever in trouble with Martinez. The stampede to get him out was a farce. We can all see that now from this vantage point.

If the aim of the club was merely to avoid relegation, then you are right, Dave. Sacking a manager for being 10 points off the drop zone and 12th was indeed madness.

But we both know that was not the aim in 2014 after finishing fifth the year before and competing in Europe.

Some people accuse generals of fighting the last war. You're fighting the Napoleonic Wars, Dave.
I see finishing just outside Euopean qualification and midtable as the same territory: i.e. nowhere good but nowhere bad. That';s where Martinez had us when he was sacked.

He took us to 5th place in his first season which was pretty much with Moyes defence and team ethic spinkled with a few loan signings like Lukaku and deulofeu. Then the longer he was with us the less fit the side looked, the less professional and the worse we became.

Just looking at the last Martinez season...

...there was a stampede to get Martinez the sack after the 2-3 home defeat against WHU (when Mirallas was sent off half an hour into it and Lukaku missed a pen to make it 3-0 for us). Here's the table from that day:

...and this was it when he was sacked the week after the cup SF defeat to United....

That's when the sickness began for this club. The first act of idiocy from Moshiri....and now he's brought us to this situation.
In that West Ham match, weren’t we 2-0 up with 10 men and he decided to throw on a striker and we ended up conceding 3 goals in the last 12 minutes? Yeah, tactical masterclass that. We weren’t aiming to “just stay up” with Martinez. We were aiming for regular European football. He was taking us on a downward trajectory with his complete inability to manage a game. The amount of times we threw games away through tactical naivety or simple lack of fitness was mounting. He was not what we needed at the time. We’d obviously kill for his record now, like!!

Moyes defence was used vastky differently to the way Moyes used it.

His problem came in season two when he should have got rid of Howard and got a GK in who could sweep and the like of Jagielka and Distin were on the slide. He should also have used what cash we had on VVD rather than Funes Mori.

The money he needed to play the way he wanted to, with technicians all over the team, wasn't there.

Nevertheless we still played good football and were never in trouble in the league and had good cup runs.

He brought Niasse on for Lennon, so like for like.

He was sacked for taking us backwards. Nothing to do with relegation.

His target for his 3rd season was to beat his poor points total of his second. He failed.

I remember this forum and the reasons stated why some wanted him gone: "He's takin' us down, lad".
