Basically what happened was that these thugs heard that there was going a professional football coming their way, and they got all excited thinking that they were going to make a mint off of kidnapping him.
They were waiting to ambush the footballer and as they pounced on him, they realized it was James Milner...

So it wasn't so much that he 'almost got kidnapped' as it was he 'didn't get kidnapped because the kidnappers have decent standards'. ?
