If we had got our act together in the summer (even if it was only signing Maupay a month earlier than we did), we'd probably have 1-3 more points. Usually I'm quite pessimistic but we're a lot harder to break down now and that counts for a hell of a lot. We're only a handful of games from the transfer window too.

We could still get dragged in to it, so there's no room for complacency. But that game yesterday, last year's team would have lost. I'm confident we'll get 43-50 points.

Could be three of about ten teams this season. No doubt it will be exciting but think we will have enough as long as we keep picking up useful points on the road. We were unable to do that for most of last season.

Definitely need attacking options in January. It's all a bit slow and pitiful when we attack with very little conviction (palace at home the exception)

Yep. Chelsea this season on the road have already been thumped at Leeds and Brighton, lost at Southampton and were very lucky to win at Palace. Given how tight the opening day was an actual CF on the pitch could've easily scrambled a 1-1.

Villa been poor although their home form has actually been decent. Still no serious shot in that game until last 10 minutes bar one that got called off for VAR.

And of course Forest at home has to be a regulation three points for pretty much everyone in the league. Poor performance that day but at least the quality of performance has improved since then.

I expect us to get 50 points at minimum. We're a hugely improved team from last season imo.

Absolutely dead and buried, they look terrible. Apparently we are super dreadful in attack and Wolves have half of our goals. Forest have scored 8 and allowed 28. Nobody is arguing its mathematically impossible for them to win a bunch, but that they are so bad they arent going to. At this point its a question of who the 3rd team is, and why is it Bournemouth vs Southampton.
We’ll see.

They still shipped 53 goals though. That’s just under a goal and a half every game.

We’re currently at less than a goal a game after 12 games. If we keep that rate up its highly unlikely we go down conceding less than 38 goals.

Worth saying, I cant see a team in the PL who has been relegated conceding less than 53 goals.

We have conceded 12 in 13. We would need to concede 41 in 25 to match that. That's around 62/63 goals a season. Marginally worse than the 65 we conceded last season.

I mean these things are not guaranteed, but unless we replicate last seasons defensive performance for the rest of the season, it would be without precedent that we would get relegated.

Essentially if you conceded say 50 goals and under, you remain competitive in enough games to accumulate points.

This is all about the balance of the team isn’t it. We can’t just ‘go for it a bit more’ because as soon as you do you leave yourself defensively open. That balance between scoring more goals than you let in has to be found but I’m starting off by tightening up is a far easier thing to do for a bottom half team than to suddenly start hitting 4s and 5s away from home at good PL sides. Lampard has taken exactly the right approach as a first step for improvement. Individually our defenders were some of the worst in the league last season, now they’re one of the best defensive units. Huge improvement.

Surely people honestly don't think we're going to go down?

Defensively we are way better compared to the crap Benitez served up.

Loads of room for improvement obviously but with the right signings there's a good chance to see some decent football.

The trophy debate is also laughable, if we've waited 27 years, another few years of trying to build something couldn't hurt.

It’s very tight at the bottom and 2 wins for anyone pulls them out of it for a while .. 2 big winnable games coming so hopefully we produce. DCL is getting more fitness and hopefully will weigh in with goals in next 2 games. Not worried anymore but need points on the board to give us some comfort and hopefully help us push on …

Dont think we will but still would feel alot better when the team is clear from it. With the world cup is abit of a strange season so is hard to say what the difference will be like after

I don't think we will, but we'll be in amongst it if we continue to score at the current rate. Lack of goals at this level means you're struggling to win games, and if you don't win enough games you'll be in the relegation fight. 5 points off bottom as we speak and nearly half a season played. It's almost unfathomable to me how some people can confidently think we aren't going to be scrapping to stay up this season.
