Strange times indeed.
I get why Starmer is calling for a general election as he needs to be seen to be saying and doing the "right things". But if he really wants to take over control of this country right now he must be an absolute idiot. Politically and financially, we're in the middle of one of the most turbulent era's in recent times and in the short term it will only get worse. Covid, Ukraine, cost of living, inflation, civil unrest, climate change, strikes, Brexit fallout and crazy fiscal management is a cocktail of disastrous proportions that is practically impossible to manage.
2 years is a very short time in politics and the next 2 years are going to be horrendous. There are many very difficult decisions to be made and millions of the electorate will be turned off whichever way they go. Even if they are the best decisions for the country they will still piss most people off. It's a no win situation at the moment, whoever is in charge. Many of the problems are already out of our control.
The Tories are already finished as a political power, for at least as long as people see Labour as a viable alternative. If they had any sense they would realise that and call for a general election now, thereby throwing Labour into the hot seat. The best scenario for them is that many will turn against Labour as they too struggle to control the situation, and they get a fighting chance at the next general election in 5 years time. But the Tories won;t do that. They will try and cling on to power and in doing so will dig an even bigger trench for themselves that is already as deep as the Mariana. For me, that is playing right into Starmer's hands.
In my opinion, Labour should use the next 2 years planning for an extended period in government. For building a manifesto focusing on long sustainable economic growth based around a green economy and self sufficiency as much as practical, involving the nationalisation of many key industries including utilities, transport and steel. The Tories struggling for the next 2 years will ensure Labour win the next election with a sizeable majority and with luck. many of the issues causing grief at the moment, will have been resolved to a large extent, leaving Starmer able to focus on the things that matter, like climate change and building a green economy.
After all that doom and gloom, I've just seen that slippy has been sacked. There is a God after all.
