Everton are pursuing a deal for Middlesbrough standout Hayden Hackney, looking to fend off heavy Premier League competition for the 23-year-old midfielder’s signature.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Everton are currently in talks with Middlesbrough. While Hackney has also drawn serious interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, and Crystal Palace, the player’s personal preference is reportedly a move to Everton.
With only 12 months remaining on his current contract at the Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough find themselves at a crossroads. The Championship club are reportedly prepared to let Hackney enter the final year of his deal unless an incoming offer fully meets their valuation.
A Midfield Reshuffle at Everton Stadium
Everton’s push for Hackney comes amid potential sweeping changes in the middle of the park as they prepare for their upcoming campaign at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Veteran midfielder Idrissa Gueye is out of contract this month, though the club is scheduled to hold talks with him regarding his future. Meanwhile, doubts have emerged over Tim Iroegbunam, who has attracted outside interest in recent months.
Should a deal for Hackney stall, Everton have also identified Southampton’s Shea Charles as a potential alternative to bolster their midfield ranks.
Hackney’s Rising Stock
The 23-year-old has established himself as a key figure on Teesside. A product of Middlesbrough’s academy, he made his senior debut in January 2021 before a formative loan spell with League Two side Scunthorpe United during the 2021-22 season.
Last season, Hackney enjoyed a highly productive campaign, racking up 41 appearances across all competitions while contributing six goals and eight assists. His stellar performances didn’t go unnoticed, as he was crowned the EFL Championship Player of the Season. To cap it off, he was also voted Middlesbrough’s Player of the Season by supporters for the second consecutive year.
