Everton midfielder James Garner has predicted that Dominic Calvert-Lewin has plenty more goals in him this season.
The £15m midfield maestro said of his Toffees teammate that the goals will ‘fly in’ as long as the 26-year-old forward continues with his recent form.
James Garner was on target for Sean Dyche’s side with his first Premier League goal during Saturday’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth, and while DCL didn’t get on the scoresheet, he put in an indefatigable performance leading the line.
Indeed, the England international looks to be back to his best, with three goals in six games so far this season, and James Garner is confident his Everton teammate’s goals ‘will come’.
Speaking with the Liverpool Echo, the Everton midfielder said: “We missed him (Calvert-Lewin) last season, and it’s a huge confidence boost having him back in the side.
He didn’t get his goal (against Bournemouth), but his all-round performance helped us. I was just speaking to him then.
He was gutted he didn’t get his goal and gutted he came off because he said he was maybe trying a bit too hard to score. His goals will come. If he keeps on performing, then I think they’ll fly in.”
Calvert-Lewin needs the confidence Garner has in him to come from the fans as well
Everton are a better side with DCL leading the line and there is no doubt that the 26-year-old was sorely missed throughout last season.
Indeed, it often seemed to be one step forward followed by two in the opposite direction in terms of the striker’s fitness in recent years, but DCL himself has recently praised the patience of manager Sean Dyche since his appointment.
Everton were one of the lowest goalscorers in the Premier League last season and initially struggled to get off the mark in the early weeks of this campaign.
However, with a fully-fit Dominic Calvert-Lewin, no doubt James Garner’s confidence in his teammate will be justified.
