so the defence then.

Who is at fault?

We seemed to look a lot stronger last year with Stonesy in there over Jags, brought the best out of Distin too with more responsibility at his door but who now also looks shaky.

We all know how good James McCarthy is but his faults can't go unnoticed, twice in 2 weeks he's either let his man get a cross in or beat him on the left wing both creating goals.

I think it's just a case of tightening everything up and as the games roll on we'll get stronger defensively.

One clean sheet will do us the world of good.

Were unlucky with the two deflections, the cock up and the offside but despite all that unluckiness, there was definately some poor defending mixed which helped to cause the goals.
  • First goal Jags is too slow in stepping up. Puts Costa onside.
  • Second goal is offside, but Baines needs to step up quicker
  • Third goal the deflection is desperately unlucky from Coleman. Not much that could have been done better here, looked as though Maccas legs had gone.
  • Fourth goal unfortunate deflection leaves Howard stuck in no mans land. Never should have been allowed the space to shoot in the first place, closing down was atrocious
  • Fifth goal, tracking and marking from Macca and Barry atrocious, Baines stuck in no mans land.
  • Sixth goal, poor mistake from Besic. Jags and Distin nowhere to be seen

Spot on mate.

tbh Stones didn't have a good preseason either. His form at the moment might not be much better than Jags or Distin. Alcaraz is just out of form all the time.

3 of Bobby's purchased signings this season have been defence and defensive midfielders and we're now worse in that department than last year, something not right there

Thing is, if we're going to have a CB making mistakes that see us drop points I'd prefer it was Stones - at least he will learn and develop from the game experience.

Can we see a purchase being made before Tuesday, then?

I'd like to think we can line someone up in that time.

Hijack Agger's move to Brondby?

Defenders are shocking, Central defender is a must. Two aging center halves needs to be addressed.

Jagielka isn't the same player, he isn't a proper captain either.

Get Van Dijk in.

Spot on.
Reckon we just need go with stones and rotate jags/distin.
Make McCarthy captain.

Just been kicking fock out of the cat. One word - bloody awful.

No knee jerk from me. 1st is Jagz. Track runner. 2nd is offside. 4th is Distin - close your man quicker. They weren't 3 goals better today. Need to be less [Poor language removed] or need to be much better.

Right now to go kick the dog....

This back 4 is the same as last year, when they were one of the top 3 defences in the country.

It's a bad start. It'll get better.

YES. Money is available.

So see a phased removal of Distin and to put Jagielka under pressure for his place.

We need a big, strong, technically gifted centre back with experience, but age on his side. That requires a lot of money in today's market and this late on...

Nothing can describe the defending today and that includes McCarthy and Barry, utter shambles! Shame as well as we looked great going forward and probably would have got something with just half decent defending
