Didn't he also tell Whelan that he didn't think he was the right man for taking Wigan back into the PL? What makes him think he can take Everton back into the CL then??

Poor choice of words.

He said he didn't feel equipped to take Wigan back into the Prem, not he wasn't the right man.

One of the most dismal features of this manager debate has been Evertonians looking down their noses at replacements for Moyes...as if we just let a highly successful manager slip through our fingers who lived up to the school of science traditions. Well we didn't. And United have made a monumental error in hiring him. Martinez is already ahead of the game in comparison to Moyes, IMO, and he'll do a different and at least as good a job here if/when he signs in and we give him time and support.

Couldn't agree more mate, don't think people appreciate how difficult a job Wigan is in the wealthiest league in the world.

Everton Statement:

In response to regrettable and somewhat premature reports earlier this evening, Everton Football Club are continuing discussions with regards to the vacant managerial position.

Whilst positive moves are being made, the Club will officially announce details as and only when they are agreed and completed.

carey was sacked for finishing 5th - an achievement the everton hierarchy deemed a failure

times have changed sadly, now winning the 7th place trophy earns you a 10 year contract.

Carey was a very good Manager fetched the Golden vision & Roy Vernon to the blues - HC was a ruthless business Manager Alan Ball hated him { just reading his life story}as did Alex Young! HC created successful teams full of home grown players & big named expensive stars!

oooooh

Care to elaborate mate ? I understand and share your concern about the transfer market as he has an impossible act to follow. But otherwise ?

Most pro-Moyes posters will be inclined to be sceptical, naturally. I can't speak for everyone who wanted Moyes to stay, but they thought Moyes, above all, was the right man for the job. He fitted us like a glove. He's turned us into a top team on a shoe-string and has left to take the biggest job in football replaced by a young manager who is really quite unproven despite his FA cup win.

Martinez has never had a job remotely like this and we have no idea how he'll do, let's face it. He'll be under more pressure here than in either of his previous jobs and he will take more stick for his shortcomings than at Wigan where he had the mitigating factors of having a sh*t budget as well as a sh*t side. We need this appointment to work. I see this as much more of a gamble than the other candidates.

we never got into the champions league. We got to the qualifier about eight years ago. We've not exactly been regulars.
