4th Place - What's it going to take?

but for WBA home and away, the Sland game and Norwich at home and it would be a bit more than mathematically on
No offence but every team can say that. That is what seperates title winners from top 4 finishers. The fact they dont slip in games they should win.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has said his team may have been guilty of taking their place in next season's Champions League for granted.

The Gunners have slid to fifth in the table, two points behind fourth-placed Everton going into their game with West Ham at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

"Maybe yes, we felt 'that is done'," said Wenger when asked if the squad had assumed they would make the top four.

Wenger added it was "vital" his side reached the Champions League.

Arsenal, who have played in the Champions League for 16 consecutive seasons, set the early pace in the title race and were leading the table as recently as 20 January.

But a disappointing run, featuring heavy defeats by Liverpool, Chelsea and Everton, has left the Gunners in a battle to qualify for Europe's top club competition.

"We have had a difficult schedule [this season] and the weight of a negative result, the mental aspect of a negative result in a big game, is massive," added Wenger.

"To deal with that is very difficult and when you have a succession of big games one after the other, if you lose the first one you are always in trouble."

Arsenal beat Wigan 4-2 on penalties on Saturday to reach the FA Cup final, increasing the prospect of ending their nine-year trophy drought.

  • Tuesday, 15 April: v West Ham (H)

  • Saturday, 3 May: v West Brom (H)
  • Saturday 11 May: v Norwich (A)
Wenger has often been criticised for prioritising a top-four finish over winning a trophy, and once again he was at pains to emphasise the importance of competing with Europe's best sides.

"For many years I was sitting here and had to convince you that it was important that we were in the top four - now it is in a reverse position, you say to me 'you realise how important it is for us'.

"It is vital to me to do it. I want this club to play in the top-level competition, and for that you want to be in the Champions League.

"The pain of not having it? I would like them [the players] rather to concentrate on the pleasure to be in it.

"It is vital for the young players as well. You learn more by playing against Bayern or Barcelona or Real Madrid than if you play in the Europa League, that is for sure."

Wenger admitted having another important game so soon after the gruelling 120 minutes at Wembley was "not welcome", but said he believed the victory could lift his players.

"If we had gone out [of the FA Cup], it would really have been terrible. The fact that we come out in a positive mood will help us to recover. I believe physically we can cope with it," he said.

i don't see why he says this like this all the time. does he honestly believe that their fixture schedules are harder than teams in other comps? i don't understand his thinking of moaning about this issue every season.

interesting to see if arsenal fans would take 5th if the win the FA Cup btw, if i was in their position, i would, NEA.

every team could say that about games they've dropped points in. we don't mention the games we've won that we should have drawn etc. (only been about 2 or 3 tbf)

I think our luck has being counter weighted with some lucky results to us. Villa away, Fulham away, Sland away ect are a few results that went into our favour that we should have probably drawn

Interestingly, it's possible that if Man City are found to have breached FFP, they could be disqualified from european competitions. Hence another way in?

Unlikely, but possible.

Very unlikely.

I'd love to see it, but FFP is a big charade in my opinion. They'll never stop these global brands from entering the most elite competition, as they make everyone too much money.

same. they'll get some sort of fine and pay it off. i saw an article about it that said apparently us or arsenal could appeal for them to miss CL haha could see wegner trying if we pip them to 4th

City have done exactly what they planned to do all along. City will initially "fail" FFP. Then they will use the June '10 wage exclusions amongst others to "pass" FFP. Nobody should be surprised about this, it's what they planned to do. You cannot use that wage exclusion or some other exclusions unless you initially "fail" FFP.

Unfortunately this means that the papers get to write the "CITY FAIL FFP" headline they've been creaming themselves over for 4 years.

We will technically fail when they do their initial calculations. Then use UEFA's exclusions to pass with no sanctions.

If you want a primer on next month's headlines, the one they'll all be furiously wanking over then will be "UEFA CONFIRM INVESTIGATION OF RELATED PARTY TRANSACTION BY CITY". People will sort of wink-nudge that this is the Etihad deal and it isn't. City will be investigated for a RPT as they legally declared a RPT in their accounts and it means UEFA have to look into it by their own rules. The Etihad deal was not reported and by the UEFA definition (which is essentially the worldwide definition), is not a related party transaction so won't see any adjustments made.

After seeing that game last night, think 4th is going to be a massive ask. We might literally have to win every game from now til the end of the season, which I just can't see us doing, sadly.

Before the season I would have accepted even 12th if at the end of the season it was clear that we would improve given time. I didn't imagine us finishing higher than 6th.

33 league games later we're 5th with a game in hand and a point behind Arsenal in full panic mode hoping to hang on to 'their' champions league place and trying to put 'pressure' on us, as if we could be intimidated by boring mind games from the professor of whining. You just keep your panic Arsenal.

RM has said all along we don't think about league places, we don't look at the table to know what we should do, we just enjoy where we are and concentrate on our own performances, doing that there's no stopping us.
Sin miedo. It's on.
