Yanks going mental because of 'soccer'

In that case football in England will wither on the vine, Nige.

There is no street football in this country anymore. Leastways if there is I haven't seen it in yonkos.

It's happened already mate we'll get the odd throwback like Rooney to remind us of how it was but overall skill levels and numbers have declined with the fall in impromptu footy. The signs were there in early 80s and armageddon has arrived. Fans demand success and watching fundamentally flawed English players getting exposed ain't success without the protection of foreign imports they are cack.

Zola, Berkamp, Henry, Gulitt, Suarez, Cantona, Drogba, Van Persie, Veira, Toure, Ockocha et al rate as 8/9 out of 10.

I'd only put Beardsley and Gazza on a good day near those players.

Shearer, Owen, Lampard, Beckham, Scholes, Waddle, Wright, Sheringham, Rooney are 6/7 out of 10 at best.

We just kid ourselves in this country because the Prem is minted ergo we're successful which mutates into our best players are world class. The last decade of Beckhams and Rooneys drifting anonymously out of tournaments nails that myth.

The England team should be disbanded as is and handed over to the Championship and lower league sides where most supporters come from. Couldn't do any worse and it would mean something to them.

Been the best nation over over the last few tournaments in fact I think they will win a World Cup in the next 10-20 years on the way to being a dominant global force - brilliant to see, soon the states is going to be the Mecca of football!

One of the great stories in recent football history and amazing the way it's taken off, i predict world domination!

Wait until Qatar host the World Cup, with the "legacy" effect they'll be winning everything in sight.

Nbc is beginning to promote the upcoming season to take advantage of the current interest
Here is on eo their trailers

No Arsenal or Spurs players mentioned but Barkley for Everton :)

Excellent preview, even got a naked Korean chick in the thumbnails for other vids on youtube :)

Still think there is an outside chance of the US being chosen as an emergency backup location instead of Qatar.

It is one if the few nations that could hold such a big event on very short notice having huge stadiums with good facilties for players and fans alike. The summer weather is manageable and the commercial pull from sponsors like Nike/Coke/'McDonalds might be enough to get FIFA to pull out of Qatar on "moral" grounds while making out like bandits.

RTE were doing a light-hearted preview of the WC Finals in USA 1994. A young presenter wearing an Ireland shirt was interviewing various New Yorkers about what they knew about the game.

Most knew very little, but the best answer was from an "artistic" chap which went something like this:

Interviewer: Hi, we're from Irish TV and we would like to ask if you know much about the World Cup which is being held in the USA this summer.
Interviewee: No... what is that all about.

..a few more similar questions with similarly blank responses. Finally

Interviewer (pointing to his Ireland jersey): Do you know what this is?
Interviewee:....let me see... Is it Polyester?

so FC Tucson had a match tonight, on 'Murica's birth day.

we're, oh, the equivalent of whatever you have behind League 2.

as Tommy, the Cactus Prick equivalent of, say, Bluto from Animal House (and whom I would endorse him as a Senatorial candidate) remarked, deadpan, "Well, now that the US is bounced from the World Cup, no one care about soccer anymore."

our keg did not last. was D.O.A. maybe 30 minutes before kick off. not before it helped us attract a few more fans.

biggest crowd i've seen is maybe 1,000, when we played (and beat) MLS Chivas LA. possibly a bunch of snowbirds when we played host to the Portland Timbers vs the Seattle Sounders.

tonight?

2,983.

So full that people were sitting on the grass around the bleachers, and the Posh Spice endorsed (well, "haha fc tucson/cactus pricks! lol" tweet) Cactus Pricks were bumped to the forever vacant small bleachers on the far side of the field. the even smaller (and also perennially vacant) bleachers behind either net were also full.

a bunch of kids missed the match, far too busy chasing one another dribbling their own balls.

not all, though. one was helping lead the cheer we blatantly stole from Celtic (Tucson!/Tucson! Come on you boys in red!/Come on you boys in red!). another was waving the flag.

scored a dirty ping-pong goal in the 70th minute, after it deflected off about six players in the box and a Desert Ninja slammed it home. being slightly toasty, grabbed the nearest red and black flag (not the one from the kid), and bolted up and down the side of the pitch.

Won the match.

Clinched the division.

even after the fireworks started, the one lad still had not relinquished the FC Tucson flag. still was waving it.

walked off happy, knowing the sport continues to take root.

morning after edit... well reasoned considering how many barley sodas I had.

Blurb on the news. Ignore the dude in the KC Royals hat "i'm just here for the beer. and the fireworks. and the nachos." Around the 30s mark they cut to one of the Pricks leading the chant for a few seconds. That was earlier in the match. Towards the late second half the little kid to his right was taking lead.
