Hey everyone,

I'm a 20 year old American studying abroad in Barcelona for the summer. One of the first things I had on my bucket list while studying in Europe was to come to Goodison to watch a match. I was able to buy tickets for the Merseyside Derby and just had some questions about the city and the stadium.

First off, my seats are in Lower Gwladys 4 Row FF. In general, what should I expect from these seats? And is there anything I should know before coming to the match (songs, traditions, etc.)?

Secondly, I wanted to know more about the city. What are the must sees/must dos (restaurants, bars, attractions).

Finally, where is the best part of town to stay? Being a student, I have a limited budget, so areas with cheaper hostels or housing would be preferred.

Thanks and COYB,
Dan

Firstly, well done on your getting yourself over here for a Derby. You will absolutely love it, until the game starts of course. Check the view from your seat on Everton's ticketing site. Row ff sounds fine to me, not far back enough to think you're watching the game through a letter box.

I love getting into the ground slightly earlier on Derby day. That 10 minutes between the players finishing their warm up and z-cars kicking in is something you need to experience.

In terms of where to stay there are hostels in the city centre but they're expensive for what they are. Worth checking around on booking.com and just seeing what you fancy. Wherever you stay in the city it's easy enough to get around via bus/train.

Where do you study in the US?

Try the Penny Lane Hotel. It's not in town but there are regular buses from there. Comfortable, cheaper than town. The boys who own it are Rednoses but you can't have everything. As for things to do and see, try and get tickets for the Terracotta Army at the World Museum and don't miss the cast-iron men on Crosby beach. Some great places to eat on Bold Street, especially Bakchich.

I stayed at a place right actoss the street to lime street station where you could easily catch a bus to the stadium. It was a dump, but it was in the city center all I need is a bed anyway. Hotels are mostly cheap there.

I prefer staying at the Premier Inn at Moorfields. Conveniently located close to City Centre, Albert Docks and Liverpool One. Also Moorfields train station less than a 2 minutes walk away. Takes you to Kirkdale, which is a 10 minutes walk away from Goodison. Pubs a plenty to chose from.Either in the city or around Goodison.

...agree, go on line and book a visit to see the Terracotta Army. They’re nothing to do with Liverpool but it’s a lot cheaper than going to China.

If you like a Beatles singalong, have a few drinks in the Cavern. Lots of good places to eat and drink in the city centre. Perhaps a trip on the Mersey Ferry to catch a glimpse of the skyline and see the site of our new stadium.

Songs - we don't really do songs, too cool for school us (well we sing about the RS even when not playing them)
Traditions - Boo and then boo some more

Ouch mate, I think you've got one of the obstructed views there.

We could do with a permanent thread for first timers.

Not a bad idea, that

My contribution would be that if you're a first timer to the city, a visit to the Maritime Museum, The International Slavery Museum and The Museum of Liverpool would be worth it - helps explain the history of our city and how we developed, declined and came out of the other side again. The Beatles Story would be another one which is worth visiting. There's an open top bus tour around the city which is one of those hop-on, hop-off things, might be worth it as it'll take you around more or less all the points of main interest in the city centre

Museum of Liverpool - http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/mol/

Martitime Museum - http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/index.aspx

International Slavery Museum - http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/ism/index.aspx

The Beatles Story - http://www.beatlesstory.com/

Open top bus - http://cityexplorerliverpool.co.uk/

Unless you're a Beatles fanatic I'd give the Beatles story a swerve.

All the museums already mentioned plus the tate is worth a look.

You mentioned you're on a budget but getting budget accommodation outside the centre be a false economy if you need to get to and from thw city a few times.
