Would you give Stubbsey another year?

i dont know who they are, but i suspect sunderland would bend over backwards for such a committed die hard defender, that can read the game and extinguish the danger.

does that count as reminiscent ironic?

Agreed Suits, even next season the likes of Derby would grab him, keep him as an insurance policy

I will say that in comparison to Weir, you could see Weir make more than the odd mistake and get beat more than once in a match. You could tell that the pace of the Premier League had finally caught up with him.

That hasn't happened with Stubbs yet. Not saying it couldn't next week, next month, or next year. But I don't worry with Stubbs in the back like I did with Weir in his last season with us.

I'd sign Stubbs but I'd also be sure to let him know that he wouldn't be first choice and would fill in related to injury or cup matches. I think everyone could live with that.

i suppose it depends on the terms, experienced player, dedicated pro, more for moral than on pitch excursions, keep him for the derby and the manure games on the 89th minute.

Too slow to be a regular but as a sub/insurance policy would be ok for. So yes, as long as he doesn't ask for too much money.

I'm more worried about carsley lasting another year - at least we've got alternatives at centre back.

We dont seem to have a genuine solution to the defensive midfield role when carsleys not fit or playing well

Another year Yes so that he can be called on when urgently needed but can see a role for him in coaching and looking after the younger players.

Stubbsy for the Academy/defensive coaching role. Start low, work up. Too soon for him to replace Irvine. But in time he will be ready. IMO

This is the kind of thing that I'm confused about (nothing personal Gaz). In the aftermath of the Croatia game youth football has been in the spotlight and it's widely believed that we don't have good enough coaches in youth football, hence why we don't produce good enough young players. Yet Stubbs is seemingly qualified for one of these vital roles, based on what? Does he have the coaching qualifications?

I'm not trying to pick on anyone here, just trying to understand the reasoning behind people wanting him as a coach. Sure he's been a dedicated performer for us but if playing ability is a guide (which lets face it, it isn't), even then he's not the most qualified having never been capped internationally. Would anyone want Rhino coaching at the club? Is it because he's been here a while now and it's his due or something?

He may have the credentials and qualifications to make a fantastic coach, my point is that none of us know one way or the other. It's not like analysing players where you can see how they perform each week. Who here could say with any accuracy what Irvine's role was at the club, or what his strengths/weaknesses were?

Now, this is just me wishing here, but what would really set this site apart from the other Everton ones out there would be if someone could find this out. I don't know if training sessions are ever open to the public but if they are that would at least give an idea of the various merits of the coaches we have, at all levels of the club, not just first team. Without that we're all guessing.

He has already done his first stage badges from what I can gather mate. There are not many people that I think can do a coaching role, but I feel that stubbsy can. Mainly as I said in another thread because he has been doing it in schools in his spare time. That are my basic reasons behind it mate. Carsley does it with children less fortunate also. Both have the personal attributes, but I understand what you are saying.

Johnny King came through in similat fashion Gaz, when he was at Tranmere he took us lads training in Arrowe Park, he is also a belting lad and ex blue

Back on topic regarding giving him another year....

OK, I lie, not really on topic as such, but I do feel that with him playing, Lescott or Yobo (whoever's alongside him) seem a little more assured, as do the full-backs, when we're under the cosh. That's cause Stubbs bosses the defence, and neither of the others does as yet. Robbie Earle made that point about Spurs yesterday - without King there's no leader at the back - and I do have that one niggling concern about our otherwise outstanding first choice central defence.

Stubbs next year is probably not the answer, and perhaps by next year J-Lo will have gained the confidence to be more vocal - don't see Joey doing it somehow.

That's fair enough, I've said a few times that we should be grooming coaches from within so that they know the 'Everton Way' and can get cracking straight away rather than having to learn the culture, or worse changing the culture. I just want the club to make sure the insiders are bloody good at their job as well as being a familiar face around the place.

you know that can lead to pain further down the road though, new manager - totally new regime, out with the old in with the new.

fine line between complacency and rigid method.
