Worst defence we've never had?

Poor in dealing with counter attacks, and our defensive midfielders while very technical haven't totally clicked leaving the back 4 exposed

I haven't been confident in keeping a clean sheet since Jagielka and Lescott were literally better than Puyol and Pique in early 2009.

As mentioned earlier the problem is further up the pitch certainly not the personnel in the defence. Baines, Distin and Jags, despite current form, are all quality players. Hibbo is a capable defender if lacking in other areas. Howard has some weaknesses but there are plenty of worse keepers in the league.

It's overly simplistic to say "we conceed goals so the defence is ****e". Not having an outlet upfront that can hold the ball up and bring the midfield into play, having too many defensive minded midfielders in the centre so the striker, sorry midfielder playing upfront is isolated, lacking players (or having them resistricted by position they are asked to play) with the natural inclination to link defense to midfield and midfield to attack etc etc all contribute to the ball coming back at us too frequently.
But what's going to be done about it? Are you saying that if we were sent out to attack, we'd keep more clean sheets?
One clean sheet so far this season and last season was just as bad. Is it the tactics or the coaching?
