Worldwide scouting...surprising outcome.

Frankly I don't think spotting Stones is a major scouting coup. The lad was already making waves in the league and it would only have been a matter of time before he was snapped up.

It's finding the overseas players who are just breaking through in Eastern Europe or S America that are the real prize.

South Americans will always have work permit issues if they're young as they wont have played enough internationals to satisfy the UK work permit.

Africans I can live without, some great players but we're not in a position where we can have a major player disappear for 2 months in the New Year every couple of years.

The days of unearthing the 2 million pound gem from lower leagues has gone. Prices for even championship or league 1 players is ridiculous.

Give him time though

I wouldn't say Moyes was good at scouting at all - I mean aside from Stones who's actually progressed into a first team player than he's brought in young?

Seamus Coleman?

Moyes had a decent network and unearthed a few class players for very little. Cahill, Fellaini, Arteta etc. No manager has a 100% hit-rate with transfers anyway, I reckon if 2 or 3 out of 5 come good, you're doing okay.

Okay I'll agree with Coleman but the others? No chance. Fellaini was well known for his exploits in the Europe League (if I knew him before we signed him he was no hidden gem). Cahill was highly rated in the Championship and was like 25 when we got him. Arteta again was mid-20's and fully established as Rangers "star" man.

Cahill, Lescott, Pienaar, Baines ?, Oviedo, Coleman.
Arteta had been a success in Scotland but really hadn't done much besides, we picked him up for about 2m and sold him several years later for 10m that must be considered great business, Lescott even moreso.

I'd say Moyes' "Bargain Basement" buys were his forte. Cahill, Arteta, Coleman, Stones, Oviedo.
A decent record with loans. Pienaar (initally), Donovan, Fernandes (first time), Jo (first time).
His mid range were mostly okay. Hits being Jagielka, Distin, Baines. Misses being Kroldrup, Davies, Beattie.
His big buys were really up and down though. Yak, AJ, Fellaini and Bily.

Are you suggesting that Moyes didn't find enough players in that 18-22 bracket that are just out of their own youth system but not yet established players? That's a pretty narrow bracket, like. It's easy to see it now, but there was no guarantee Cahill or Arteta would be successful in the Premier League. We only ever see the hits. Likewise, most young players fail to make significant breakthroughs, and that applies to every team in the world. We have a big academy and youth system but most of them won't make the grade, it's just the way it is and Moyes did a decent job identifying talent as, I feel, Roberto is doing now.

I'm hugely disappointed with Martinez , when he arrived i thought here we go , a nice half time paella and sangria by the jug.Just lukewarm Chang and a soggy burger still .Must do much better .
