Not logic exactly but after starting with GRAIN and getting a yellow I and a green N it rather cut down the 4th letter options and the placement of the I. So, instead of finding more consonants I thought I'd think of where I could fit in another vowel. As soon as I considered - - ION I straight away thought of ONION. I could just as easily thought of UNION first.
