The news comes after FA chief executive Martin Glenn confirmed to FA councillors for the first time that a two-week break was to be implemented.

The agreement with the Premier League, which is likely to be signed off next week, will mark the end of more than a decade of debate over giving top players recuperation time after the busy Christmas schedule.

In return for the boost to the national team, the FA has agreed to stage the fifth round of the FA Cup in midweek.

Glenn told councillors: "We're working closer and more collaboratively with the professional game than at any time in recent years.

"Very soon this will pay dividends with the creation of a mid-season break, which is a much-needed improvement for our clubs and England teams."

Better not be over Xmas. Football is the only thing that makes it bearable.
It is isn't it? Like over christmas/just after surely?

Just with a gap that doesn't stop footy completely each weekend but instead reduces games played, thus allowing each team a small break over said period.

Real shame, but;

break from competitive games in January and the start of February.

The FA has been pushing for a winter break for years in the belief that the competitive nature of the Premier League leaves players drained for international tournaments at the end of the season.

The break will not impact on the traditionally hectic Christmas schedule, which is seen as vital to preserving the value of the Premier League’s lucrative television deal. Any reduction to it would have angered supporters.

Is significant.
