Forum nobodies...this is how you do a first reply.

Charming. The People's Club but the "somebodies" forum.

Agreed. It's a good post mate and you're actually spot on.

I had you down as a forum B lister. Be careful.

What I can't fathom is how much we have been caught in between two ideologies.

By this I mean we have brought in McGeady, Lennon, Atsu and Mirallas. Players that give the ball away a lot but are very quick and can stretch teams. This would be suited to a "Counter-Attacking" team.

Yet he still seems to persist on passing it amongst the back four and hoping to draw teams onto us and then find the gaps through intelligent players such as Pienaar or Osman.

Combine this with trying to get Lukaku to do what Kone is good at is absolutely baffling.

For the record I feel if we are trying to dominate the ball and play possession we should line up.

Robles
Coleman Jagielka Stones Baines
Barry
Gibson McCarthy
Osman Pienaar
Kone

And if playing on the break.

Robles
Coleman Jagielka Stones Garbutt
Besic McCarthy
Lennon Barkley Mirallas
Lukaku

People mean players that are comfortable and effective out wide when they say 'wingers', which is why they're correct about us needing two of them.

City wouldn't play Jovetic or Toure out wide, and they're far more comparable to Naismith and Barkley than the likes of Silva or Nasri are.

The way the front four is being set up at the moment is absolutely garbage.

I wonder how well a 3-4-2-1 would work with our setup. Does it put more emphasis on them being inside-forwards rather than wingers? Something like:

--------------Robles
--Stones----Jagielka-----Besic
Coleman McCarthy Gibson Baines
-----Lennon----------Mirallas
--------------Lukaku

Maybe we should start calling them inside forwards rather than wingers. No top team really plays with a proper wingers today.

The problem is that Barkley and Naismith don't have the ability to beat someone from a standing start. Naismith's passing isn't very good and Barkley and Mirallas have been poor this year.

The rest are too wasteful which is dangerous for a team that likes to dominate possession and they also don't contribute enough in terms of goals and assists.

We're really missing Deulofeu, Pienaar and Osman who where big players for us last season.
For me a winger is a player who, as you say, can beat a man from a standing start, or who 'hugs' the wing, receives the ball, and either has the pace or skill to beat his man. The most important factor in being a winger is to cross a ball effectively :
beat the first man and find a player. Not to beat a man and cross aimlessly, nor try to beat him again, or to pass backwards.
True wingers went out of fashion because they were considered a 'luxury'. I don't know about anybody else but nowadays I could do with a little bit of luxury.

Absolutely this. I wouldn't even mind if we had Ossie on the left say. Just as long as we aren't using Naismith or Barkley there, as it hasn't worked all season and needs changing.

As a few other people have mentioned, the problem is playing people in wide positions who aren't comfortable playing there (or don't seem to understand how to). They don't have to be out and out wingers who hug the touchline for the whole game, just moving out there from time to time to make themselves available for a pass would be a good start!

When the ball goes to the fullback more often than not no-one makes a run in front of them to give them a passing option. This was happening again and again on Sunday when Garbutt had the ball, so the attack would break down because he would have to pass it backwards or inside.

The worst example in a game I have been to this season was Southampton when we had no width whatsoever (Eto'o - Naismith - Barkley)... they played 3 centre backs for the first time this season to stop us and it worked.
