Wing backs?

What are everyones thoughts on playing a wing back formation?

Howard
Heitinga (sweeper)
Coleman (RWB) Jagielka Distin Baines (LWB)
Fellaini Rodwell Barkley
Cahill
Vellios or Saha

For me, Cahill is far more effective when he can ghost in to the box. When he's a striker he's a niggly player but easily marked. Vellios looks like he's coming on well the more first team action he gets and I think the above team/formation makes best use of our current squads capabilities, looks solid defensively and offers an attacking threat we seem to currently lack.

Any thoughts?

I'd play Jags in the sweeper role, as Johnny and Distin aren't as prone to hoofing it out as much, with Jag as sweeper he could just pass it a few feet. I wouldn't like to see it played every week but every so often would be a fresh look for us.

Looks interesting.

Moyes will never try it in a quadrillion years.

I think this formation would spank most teams.

Howard
Hibbert Jagielka Distin Baines
Fellaini Rodwell
Coleman Osman Drenthe
Saha/Vellios

That's a wonderful counter attacking team, one which Moyes should've played yesterday.

I don't like wingbacks at all. Modern fullbacks can get up and down the pitch fine without us having to bring on a third CB.

I love 4-2-3-1 as well. Going by what I've seen from each player so far this season, I'd say our best lineup has to be:

Howard
Hibbert Jags Distin Baines
Fellaini Rodwell
Coleman Osman Drenthe
Vellios

Or maybe even Drenthe at RM (he's looked good when he's shifted over there) and Gueye at LM (not seen much this year but he does look lively).

I think any team playing a sweeper would get ripped a part these days as it was effective when the off side rules where a lot different.

That is just a fancy looking 451

The next person to suggest that stupid formation is in for a rant. You have been warned.
