Why have births outside wedlock become the norm?

One cultural shift I've noticed is how common it's become to not marry your partner and then having children. This is very apparent in the UK, where as not so common with White Americans. Why is this happening? Do you think the rise in births outside of wedlock is creating societal problems such as single parent households and children being raised under unstable homes with struggling income?

I think the societal problems you reference have nothing to do with the marriage status of parents and far more to do with their socio-economic status.

Weddings cost money and younger people already have enough challenges with housing and school prices before even thinking of spending on a wedding.

The same reason we are having less kids in general. We can't afford it for the most part.
This. Me and the missus did a whole budget projection on a spreadsheet and everything, and sadly we drink way too many martinis to afford kids.
