Player Valuation: £25m
anyone know why/how this came about. it plays into the hands of the chelsea/man city type of rich clubs who can waste wages on 7 internationals who dont mind not playing much coz they get £100k+ a week. it needs to be toned down to 2 subs or maybe 3 at the most.

I'm pretty sure it had been going on in Europe for a while before it became standard here....not that that (Muggins) helps answer your question

I like the fact it gives more options for the youngsters to get a spot on our bench. Would be even nicer if they got a chance to come on in some cases like Gueye. I see your point about the likes of Man City etc

i can see how a tactically minded coach could put several different styles of player on the bench, and have them earmarked for various situations (add width, add bodies to midfield, add attacking options, secure a lead, etc), but your'e completely right, it does reward teams with depth as we don't have the squad to make use of any advantage it gives us.

It was Tottenham Hotspur's Chairman, Daniel Levy, who pushed for the adoption of seven substitutes in domestic matches a few seasons ago.

The reasoning behind it was both to bring England in line with European practices and to offer youngsters a chance to taste first team football, even if it's usually just sitting on the bench.

Looking back on how the 7-subs rule has been implemented, as far as Spurs are concerned, there have been precious few instances of our youngsters getting first team football unless it's been in the very early stages of a domestic cup match.
