Just to add to this a while back there was a documentary (I think it was on channel 4 if anyone wants to look for it). It was about the rise in people keeping chimps as pets and people not really understanding the dangers because one had ripped a woman’s face off. A friend of the woman that owned the chimp that knew it well came to her house and as she was walking up the path it went full on bandit. Ripped her face and fingers off, mutilated her genitals (all very common for how chimps attack.

There was another guy who owned a chimp being interviewed, it was the guy you can see footage of doing karate with his chimp. They ask him if he could defend himself from his chimp if it went rogue and he’s like “yer, I’m a 9th degree black belt of course I could”.

They show the footage to a primate expert and the guy is like absolutely not, martial arts are designed to protect people from humans. A chimp is 7 times stronger than a man, a block to stop a punch wouldn’t work and the force of the punch alone would just snap his arm.

For those 2 minutes the gorilla is swinging away I imagine it would look like the beginning of Lord of the rings when Sauron is just swotting away men with his big mace

I remember years ago an old boss was South African, we were talking about the largest animal you think you could defend yourself from if your life depended on it. I reasoned in the monkey/ape world I could go up to a baboon. He very quickly and methodically told me all the ways I was wrong

That's been my thinking, the psychological effect of seeing the first 20 men torn apart removes the motivation of the rest to attack.

Similar to the Tom Cruise versus 5 Guys in that Reacher film. It's science, really.
