There's not been an obvious stand-out for best player of the tournament, tho' previous winners show it's not always the most obvious candidate, they rarely go to an actual World Cup winner:

2014 - Messi (my WC-winner choice: Neuer)
2010 - Forlan (Xavi)
2006 - Zidane (Cannavaro)
2002 - Kahn (Ronaldo)
1998 - Ronaldo (Thuram)


2018 - Modric (WC-winner choice: Griezmann)

Disagree with your 2010 assessment - thought Forlan was the clear winner as his performances both inspired and powered that Uruguay team to an unlikely semifinal. His mastery of the flight of the Jabulai when many others struggled with it was fantastic technique and glorious to watch.

Think Neuer a decent shout in 2014 although possibly Mascherano.

This time would probably vote for Modric, his energy levels alone have been immense.

Aye, agree as I almost always do with your analysis, except my choice in brackets is from the World Cup-winning team. So if not Xavi then Iniesta or Villa. If not Neuer, then Müller or Lahm etc.
