If I would have said this 4 years ago I would have stabbed myself in the jugular with a pen knife and ended it all but I seriously think we should take a chance on Donovan.
For about 7M UK we'd be getting a player in his prime (he's 27 with not many miles on him) who is capable of controlling the midfield and at that kind of money we wouldn't have to sell to buy unlike Defour, Mutinho etc. Talent wise he's off the charts (maybe better than Arteta -- Arteta is a better dribbler, Donovan has much more pace) and he now seems dedicated to being the best he could be. He's never been exposed to world class coaching like we have here and if there is one thing we are good at is plucking talented players off teams for one reason or another didn't make it at other clubs.
His corners are also ace. They end up in the center of the box out of reach of the keeper almost every time. Given that about 1/3 of our goals come on free kicks and our corners left something to be desired at times we could score alot more with him.
Plus the one aspect of his game, softness is gone. The book on Donovan used to be tackle him hard early and he'll check himself out of the match. Recently though, especially in the Confed cup he was targeted for destruction, took numerous elbows and hard tackles and got right back up with no withering and crying on the ground.
Plus don't read into the 3 month stay in Munich. He wasn't bad and under dufus Klinsmann was deployed at RW, center forward?? (all 5'6" of him), forward, left wing he never played the same position from match to match. Plus despite that I saw him get absoultely robbed on a couple shots.
Now I have my doubts that he could be successful in the prem because he may not like the weather or get homesick etc. I'd say there is a probably a 33% chance he's a bust. But if we are serious about getting into the top 4 and with teams spending more and more (we were 8th in payroll a couple years ago mow there is no doubt we are in the bottom 10) this maybe our last shot in quite a while. This is the guy with the talent to get us there. All the others, the Bradleys, Dempseys, Tuncays are nice players who I would never complain about being in a blue shirt but they don't have the raw talent to control a match like Donovan has.
