Loved the attacking football with Martinez, pity he didn't have a clue what to do when we're not in possession. I wonder if anyone ever had a word in his ear about defensive frailties before he bit the bullet, which is what senior management would do in any other walk of life, and give him an opportunity to take stock and remedy it. At least he had a go at teams instead of bus parking as soon as anyone remotely threatening was the opposition.

My apologies,I didn't know that...
I really liked Gordon Lee. He was very unlucky not to win silverware during his tenure which included that incredible 18 League unbeaten run in his first full season which crashed to an end on St Stephen's Day (Boxing Day to most of you) 1977 against the Mancs. We finished third that season 9 Pts behind the unstoppable Champions Clough's Forest.
Latch got his 30 goals that season.

Andy our King beat the rs for the first time in 7 years in 78/9.

In his first (half) season, taking over from sacked Billy Bingham in January 1977, he got to the League Cup Final and only lost after two replays, while even Blues not born should know what happened regarding Clive Thomas in the FA Cup semi final.

Bingham had gone 8 matches without a win before Lee took over and Lee got us to 9th in the League. Bingham had got us 11th the previous season but we were looking like relegation fodder by Christmas 76.

We were 4th in 78/79 but wheels came off in 79/80 when we were 19th.

That was also the season of the Latchford/Lampard high/low in the FA Cup semi final replay. Most Evertonians who remember that also remember crying like babies that night.

80/81 was again disappointing, finishing 15th, and he left in May 81.

My memories of Lee are far more positive than negative, especially how this then 12 year old felt during the 77/78 season.

Note- Gordon Lee passed on 8 March 2022. God rest his gentle soul.

I think people go way overboard with the whole 'Martinez was great but just needed a defensive coach' angle. There were some great times in that first season when we were a joy to watch but after that we were often pretty clueless going forward. We scored 10 goals in 18 league games under Martinez away at the Sky 6, compared to 16 in 18 in Moyes's last 3 seasons and 13 in 18 in 3 seasons after he left, so the idea that he was sending us to these places to have a go while everyone else just shut up shop doesn't really add up.

None but Silva would probably be best bet out of the lot

I see Lee Carsley as Moyes successor, don’t know how likely it is with him basing at home with his son, but I think he could be great and fir the club

If he needed someone to tell him him that we were crap defensively, then god knows what he was actually watching.

Wigan were crap defensively when he got them relegated as well.

He was our version of Slot. Come in and live off the coattails of the previous manager for a season before being found out.

Nah he brought in some good players who changed us, Lukaku, Barry, McCarthy even Deulofeu along with playing Stones and Barkley.

His biggest mistake for me was not sorting the goalie issue out when Howard was letting in goals all over the place.

That first season was primarily Moyes defence though. Stones only really came in to the team from the January, initially at RB before taking Jags place at CB when he got injured (with Martinez actually picking Alcaraz ahead of him for a few games initially).

Don’t deny he brought in some good players. Lukaku and Barry were incredible for us. But defensively that first season was mainly Moyes defence.

Went from conceding 40 under Moyes, to 39 in that first season to 50 and then 55. And if I recall, we were absolutely crap at defending set pieces because he didn’t coach it or something.

We have had some managers who came to us at the wrong time for Everton and the wrong time for them
Silva and Lampard are the most obvious recent examples.
It is possible our neighbours are currently suffering something similar .

Both Lampard and Silva would have been far better managers after their Everton experience but I think the lesson is that a manager taking on a big club face a very different challenge and generally need a strong CV behind them.

Not sure about Carsley myself, think he'd struggle in the spotlight personally and with the responsibility of the media glare in the all incomposing nature of the Premier League
