when was the last time we outbid a club?

after countless players have been linked with us and on the verge of signing - only to go to another club
(klose, cisse, el hamdaoui, cerci, onuoha etc etc from just this season) i just wondered when was the last time we were interested in a player and they chose us even though another club was sniffing around?
the last one i can remember was when tony cottee chose us over arsenal in 1988!!
just wanted some thoughts on this and maybe some answers
