What would it take to challenge for the title?

Full backs and the dynamic requirements of attackers means an out and out winger would be a waste of a player in the squad.

Certainly explains 1 reason Geri was binned rar off.

Think Yala and Superkev will be ok, cos both can play as a "striker", but I would imagine the boy Aaron and probably SuperKev will be moved on the summer and replaced by players that "fit the system" a bit more, which looks likely to be an overloaded midfield with full backs providing the width.

Probably about 5 players, but real top class players, between £50m and £100m. But I do t think we could attract those kind of players. So I think it means we would have to sign players in the next bracket below, get in the champions league, then buy the real top class players

We are a min of 5 years away from even being close to challenging for the title and thats in a perfect world.

The goal must surely be to improve year on year out.

If we get our recruitment correct and retain our "tier 1" players or player if truth be told, we should be able to compete with the "Elite" at the top table next season, but its all about recruitment and talent retention.

Robles, Barkley, Davies, Lukaku to continue improving at the same rate. Two top class CBs. A good backup striker. A top class second striker/wide forward type. Backup for Baines. Lookman's shots starting to go in. No major injuries. Some of the U23s stepping up well for squad depth.

The signings actually aren't the hard bit probably, assuming we get Europa.

I was thinking 4, but agree with your sentiment. We've made surprisingly big strides in Ronald's first year, our centre mids are boss, and we've culled lots of deadwood. I'm expecting an overhaul of the centre halves this summer.

That leaves a keeper, a top striker, competition for Barkley in the #10, and wingback cover. Won't happen overnight, and I suspect we'll lose Rom which will set us back a lot. 4 years sounds about right.

A couple of top class mobile centre halfs and a striker to push Rom when underperformed are musts.

But ultimately our weakness is our mentality. Not just players but everyone from the fans right through. Kenwright constructed that mindset, Moshiri (USM) need to tear it down and reveal the NSNO that we lived by prior to the SKY era.

Forget how much it costs for player A or how much we could sell player B for.

I want to see the best ply their trade here in the coming years (hopefully many of those will come through from the academy rather than purchased), but I am not interested in balance sheets and finances. I want to see us back at the top by whatever means necessary.

Hopefully we are at the start of that process but will get there in the coming years.

Obviously it will largely take improvement on our part.

But one thing is to consider the performance of teams above. We should be looking at Arsenal and Spurs and thinking we could over take them within a few seasons for sure. Both teams don't invest heavily every year, plus they could have a sudden change in management which could see their fortunes turn either way.

Chelsea, United and City operate on a different level. They, theoretically, should pull away from the pack next season. I haven't seen enough from Spurs, Arsenal or them lot to suggest they will win the league soon. Which means these are the teams we should be looking to challenge first of all.

Rom and Ross are the key to everything.

They simply must be retained, im sorry but losing them wouldnt be a set back, it would be the whole pack of cards coming down.

They are central to our ambitions, they both have the potential to be utter worldies, neither are currently perfect, I wouldnt call either World Class, they both have imperfections, but on their day, when both on top of their games, they are utterly unplayable.

If we retain them both and they maintain the hunger, the world is our oyster, but they cant do it alone, as @micknick touched on and you also, the spine of the team needs to be solid, can not fault the middle of the park, it has everything you look for in a midfield, we need a GK or Robles needs to maintain this current form, which for me, is very, very impressive, we need probably 2 CBs for me, Mori is utter garbo, Holgate is still learning and bless Jags, but hes not far off being done, he needed to play to get out of his rout, now hes gonna be rusty if given a chance, hes donezero, probably.

We would then need some cover at Wing back, the boy Baines is marching on age wise and you can only assume there will be a drop in the next few years, then of course some cover/support for the Big man up top.

5 players, 5 players ABOVE the level of Morgs, then we can challenge and thats not gonna take 2 or 3 windows.

Look above us in the table, the formula is already there:
  1. Pressure and ambition from the top down.
  2. Load's of money invested in a massive squad of top talent.
  3. A good run of lucky wins.
  4. A lack of injuries to key players
Add in a sprinkling of refereeing incompetence heavily in your favour and voila!
Rinse and repeat season after season and maybe you will be considered one of the elite.

Realistically, this summer will tell us the measure of number 1 and the promise of number 2 (the essential ingredients). As it stands, we are like everyone else outside the top 4, at the mercy of points 3 and 4. Leicester did better than everyone with these two things last season and won it. As has been proven, it was a rare anomaly.

People are forgetting that Chelsea signed players to take them up a level which then allowed them to buy top class players a few years later. People forget about the Jurgen Machos, the Wayne Bridges and the Alexey Smertins.

We're already shopping above that level admittedly but it'll still take a fair few transfers windows to build up to.

A quality keeper, a quality centre back (or two), some cover for our full backs, a quality creative midfielder, a pacy wide attacker and cover for Rom

Those players in addition to a lot of luck with injuries and some serious momentum

Leicester was a one-off that isn't likely to be repeated in my lifetime, but they're an example of the importance of luck with injuries and momentum.

It's not inconceivable that we could do it in the near future but you have to remember that even if we got all the players we need and were lucky with injuries, you have to hope that the other teams who have even better players don't play to their full potential.

A whole lot of things have to go your way if you want to win the league without necessarily having the best team
