What we need, the missing element...

Yeah and because of our finances we can't make wholesale changes every transfer window, so patience is required to see how we develope.

Do you prefer the football on offer now? And do you think we're closer to win a cup or two than we were when he showed up?
We play some lovely football and some dire football.
We are a 45 minute team who can't defend.
We have had a good cup run and beat quite a few non premier league clubs.
City will be hard over 2 legs but under martinez we are further away from a top 4 slot.
5 wins this season with this squad is dire

A centre half who can do a little bit more than give the ball away or hoof it as hard he can out of play.

Like a jarg South American Unsworth who has been moved across from LB.

We need to up our fitness by 30% in order to last 90mins.

We need a squad of very fit players in order to maximize the potential of our counter attacking style

I don't think anybody would argue that this squad is the best we've had arguably since mid 80s, in fact I'd say there is a marked similarity between where this squad stands and where the squad Howie had in 83/84 stood.
I would argue that. I think this club has more potential than any club since then, but it's far from a finished product. There's a staggering amount of young talent, but as young players tend to do, they're prone to inconsistency and mistakes.

I actually think the squad was better in 2008-2009, or at least more of a finished product. Unfortunately, injuries and Moyes' inherent conservatism kept us from really pushing on then, but that was a really well balanced squad.

Are our best players going to have the patience to stick around whilst Martinez gets it right ? That's the worry.

They're all young enough to give us a few years that won't effect their careers so hopefully yes, hopefully they see sense and show some loyalty to each other and the club.

We need to defend as a team. I hate this guff that Ross doesn't have to defend, or Gerry isn't in the team to defend. They are all responsible for defending.

I look at Spurs, and they are similar in that they have a group of young talented players, but every one of them works hard in every area of the pitch, they have a philosophy that looks like it is getting them somewhere. We have some talented individuals but very few of them look like taking responsibilty when we are under pressure.

That clown of a keeper needs binning too.

But what Howie realised he needed to get that squad over the hump and winning trophies was to recruit a winner, a character that simply would not accept second best... And the arrival of Andy Gray filled that gap, ticked that box, completed the circle and we became and learned how to be winners

That's an excellent comparison.

I'm by no means convinced that Rooney's the answer, but I do think we lack something mentally, and an older head who's not afraid of winning things would help. That might be a player, but equally, it might be someone on the coaching staff.

We need the manager whose first, second and third concern is getting RESULTS ! not players enjoying their football, passing the ball countless times etc
