Think the first paragraph sums up the problem with Rodwell; he's clearly a good footballer but he doesn't really excel at anything. I think there's a couple like that in the current squad too, Cleverley's a nice player but lacks any real stand out attributes, and I always think Oviedo's just shoehorned himself into the left back role because he lacks the physicality to play anywhere else.
In answer to the original point, I agree with the Vaughan shouts and I think Richard Dunne could have been our captain for years had we/he managed his problems a bit better when he was younger. He wasn't a world beater but he could have done us a great job at centre back for a decade.
