Think the first paragraph sums up the problem with Rodwell; he's clearly a good footballer but he doesn't really excel at anything. I think there's a couple like that in the current squad too, Cleverley's a nice player but lacks any real stand out attributes, and I always think Oviedo's just shoehorned himself into the left back role because he lacks the physicality to play anywhere else.

In answer to the original point, I agree with the Vaughan shouts and I think Richard Dunne could have been our captain for years had we/he managed his problems a bit better when he was younger. He wasn't a world beater but he could have done us a great job at centre back for a decade.

Wiki says he retired last year never having played outside the top two divisions,if true a real surprise.

He was on the sky about 2 years ago in some final playing for Dover or Gateshead someone like that, absolutely stood out. Miles ahead of anything on the pitch. Even then at 30 odd I'd still have had him over Cleverley.

Beattie never really cracked it. Or Beckford who I didn't think was given a fair chance. I vaguely remember a Scottish guy called Joe Harper who was supposed to be boss but wasn't.

Already been mentioned but Vaughan and Kenny are the two that spring to mind for me. Young Vaughan was brave as a lion and looked like a Cahill doppelganger. Kenny just tragically went down the wrong path despite having numerous chances
