I never said i didnt want to win a cup just that its not an indicator of long term success. A cup can be a one off blip not a guide of progress

It's gotta be cups innit.

Now on a purely business level it's better for a team to finish second in every competition. If you think about it Champs League place, prize money, ticket sales from a cup run but no bonuses to pay out.

A cup win + relegation or stay up + no cup as the article in the OP was talking about is a harder question. We'd surely be able to bounce straight back up but how many players would have to/want to go. Could we take the financial hit for one season?

Would rather win the cup personally, nothing beats a trip to Wembley and the feeling of an FA Cup final .... & would a cup not result in more revenue than a higher league finish anyway?

Realistically I would say the highest we could finish this season is 7th? Finishing about 10th and a cup win would lead to increase merchandise sales , a few extra season ticket sales, higher gates for home games in the run in to the end of the season (feel good factor etc.) and more media, TV coverage which would probs add on a few quid for us.

No way would I take a cup if it meant we get relegated. We've been in the top flight without relegation for about 60 years, that is a very proud record.

But I would take a cup if it meant we have a poor league season (like in 1995). I'd rather have that than finishing 4th then getting knocked out of Euro qualifiers.

Even ultimately failed cup runs are more memorable than a failed push for the top 6. Remember Fiorentina? Goslin? Phil Neville's celebration after his winning penalty?

Epic stuff.
