What makes a good Captain?

...its a difficult one this. I thought extra time in some of those key World Cup games was a real insight. If you look at Argentina, for example, Maschareno and Demarcales (the Man City CB) were leading the team talks and fist pumping players. Kuyt was similar for the Dutch, but none of these were team captains. I think there are natural leaders who don't need the armband.

When you think of good captains you think of your Roy Keane's, Patrick Viera's, Kevin Ratcliffe's and Bryan Robson's of the world. The one player that when your back is against the wall can make the rest of the team roar.

A big tackle, a great pass, a powerful run- something that can get the rest of the team motivated when its not going your way.

I personally believe the captain should have a bit of personality, a burning desire to win, respect from his team and opponents and generally be the best if not one of the best players in the side.

Pretty much nailed it there.

Lead by example, shout at those who need shouting at and encourage those who react better to that. Good leaders are the same in all walks of life. Needs to be in a position where they're all but guaranteed a place in the side too and that's about it.

IMO, the team I've seen most blessed with 'captains' was Mourinho's Chelsea first time round.

Terry, Lampard, Drogba. One in each position.

The ability to find the camera when things are going well and avoid it when they're not. The ability to berate the ref into giving your team decisions. The ability to use "I" in place of "we" whenever possible.

What about Ratcliffe, Reid and Sharp? and Bracewell, Mountfield and Stevens? all in the same team with Neville Southall, that's a team of leaders to be honest!:coffee:

I was born december 87 I saw Southall play when I was young but that's about it!

In terms of Everton atm, Jags and Barry are the two stand out captains for me.

87 not 97 ffs*

You know what though Neville had the respect of the players- any time Cahill or Landon Donovan spoke of him they spoke very highly. Ability aside I actually thought Neville was ok- didnt like him talking us down though.

Just highlights what a shameless arse kisser the man is. Whoever he can suck up to in the short term, he does.
