This is the age old question that gets asked from The board all the way down to the fans.
The answer changes like chinese whispers. The more important point is what do the board/the business men/kenwright see as a successful season?
PErsonally it is winning a trophy everytime. I dont really see the achievement in 4th. Every team at the start of the season should aim for the league title, simple as. 4th is just 4th best, and who sees pride in that?

The thing is, as bad as last night was, we've had just 3 defeats all season. Too many draws - YES! But still only 3 defeats, of which only last night's was truly embarrassing.
- Man City was a hard game, we gave ourselves a good start, we were unlucky with their goal before half time, then the class of the better team told.
- Sunderland was a bit of a freak result, silly mistake, keeper sent off, penalty scored and one of those days.
- Liverpool last night - we went into the game with a makeshift defence that made key mistakes during the game and we were made to pay by a ruthless attack that is arguably one of the best in Europe at this time.
So basically we've been embarrassed once this season. Even though it was by Liverpool and in emphatic fashion which makes it hurt a lot, it still is only once, with several of our key players injured.
It's really hard I know but we do need to put everything into perspective more than ever at this point. It has been a good season, and it can still be a great season.

Cup win for me, preferably the FA Cup. I know prize money that comes with league placement is important but I honestly celebrate a cash prize and no real club would celebrate 'just' entering a competition.
Football is a results game, it's nice to watch us play good football and win games with a swagger don't get me wrong, but in the end of the day success is tangable and that's when you end up with trophies or european football at the end of it.
If we do that we'll have had a successful seaosn, if we don't we'll have failed.
The slight grey area is that is this is the first season with a new manager and some new players and a new style so you can't judge it as harshly as the last years of Moyes' time here.
You'd expect success to be slow to come so even if we miss out on trophies or europe this year, that's fine as long as we use this season as a springboard to get them in the years following once Martinez has his feet under the table.

I think we've passed just wanting to survive in the league mate.
We've been top 7 for most of the past decade. There's no money to kick on and thus we tread water in 6th/7th, that's the problem.

Getting 5th (Europa League) would be a success this season. I think this season has again shown us that without a talented 23 person squad, you will struggle to get better than 7th (due to player attrition). Thus, if you are a financially compromised club (which we are), anything above 7th is a success. I know a lot on GOT **** off Moyes for referencing this reality many times, but he was right.

Talking of a bare minimum, usually I'd say Europa League. But it's a transitional season and after last night I can't see us getting anywhere near that as mentally we'll be flushed down the toilet.
I think we have to look at the positives we've had pre-December and look to build on that next season, but aside from a large dollop of luck in the FA Cup draw and a resultant Wembley appearance, then I wouldn't be surprised if we go into freefall now.

Finishing top 6 would have to be seen as a success in the context of the league and our financial position within it. To beat one of Spurs/Arsenal/City/Chelsea/United/Liverpool to a top 6 spot with a new manager and sod all net spend again would be a success.
