It's telling that the Guardian only use Yakubu's stats, as their other examples fall down.
Bent scored 6 in 37 in his first season at Everton, and lost his place because he was never anything more than a hard working, limited forward.
Beattie scored, I think, 5-6 in his first 25-30 games for us. He was never 'ruined' by Moyes: just a really poor signing.
Saha was a risk, obviously. Far and away his best season with us was his second.
Andrew Johnson had a decent first season before picking up an injury in his second. He was asked to 'furrow the channels' in each, as he did at Palace before.
Moyes requests his strikers work hard, and there's no doubt that, on occasion, Jelavic has been outside the area when we need him in it. But that doesn't force him into fluffing chances and kicking air. There aren't many strikers at PL level who are just poachers anymore, and to accommodate one usually means a sacrifice somewhere else. That Jelavic went on a great run when he signed was excellent for us, but proved very little seeing how common it is for players to do that. This season was always going to be the reality. He's probably better than his last three or four months, but clearly not a player who can sustain world class 2 in 3 form over a season.
