Its proper dull and sounds horribly dated imo, was a big fan back in ye day and enjoyed pretty much every album prior to this one.

It’s like they tried to go in a more post rockish direction but they suck at it. They used to be more on the funky/jammy side of prog and here they are trying to go for melody.

I re-listened to the Tool album, and what stood out to me was that the instruments were all muddled together. They’ve never had great production, but their style allowed the instruments to stand out. If they were going for melody, they really should have gone all out on production. It’s not very good.
