Were we a better team in the 60's or 80's?

For those who saw both sides, do you think we had a better team in the 60's or 80's? Obviously both era's had a load of great players, but there are also other things to consider like the standard of opposition. To my knowledge, there may have been more teams that were better during the mid to late 60's than in the mid 80's when it was only really Liverpool who were the countries top team other than ourselves.

In the mid to late 60's there was Leeds and Liverpool, Man United won the European Cup with George Best etc. From 61-70 we were almost always in the top 5, although in 66 we finished 11th but won the FA Cup. By contrast, in the 80's we only seemed to really have a top team from 84 to 88 although obviously that period was largely crippled by the European ban.

Were we considered a bigger club in the 60's or 80's too? I am guessing we were probably seen as a bigger club in the 80's as Man United were going through a tough time, and Leeds were a long way away from their glory period, so I imagine we were viewed as the countries second biggest club at that stage having won more titles than Man United and Arsenal by that stage.

Scary how far since then we have fallen behind, second biggest only to them lot.

Now we are 4th to 6th biggest depending how you look at it.

As for the original question I haven't a clue but going to ask my arl fella tonight, lucky enough to see both.

...I saw the '63 side but probably not with the analytical mind I had in 69/70 and the 80s. I always think it's difficult to judge teams from different areas so I'll leave it to Kendall and Harvey - when asked which side was better Kendall said he'd chatted with Harvey about it and Harvey said the 80s team couldn't live with the 1970 side.

Personally, I'm just happy to have seen them all.

1st-dead heat; 69-70, 84-85...
84-85 win by virtue of they hated losing more...69-70 played the best football I've ever seen
In snooker terms over 39 frames, it would be 20-19 to 84-85. They would win all the close frames but 69-70 would rack up the 147's

3rd-by a short head; 62-63
4th-by half a length; 86-87

Some kind computer savvy soul will, I hope, provide a link to my Alternate History load of old tosh

I just can't separate them. I grew up with the sixties side they were my heroes. They were gods on earth. But some of the best times of my life where following that eighties team round the country, right up to spilling out of carrow road on a sun drenched day having just won the league again. Draw!!

I forgot to mention that regarding which era we were considered the bigger club, a case could be made even further for 1960's Everton due to the prestige Goodison gave us. As a fan that was born in the late 80's and grew up seeing the 1990's side, it's hard to appreciate having the rest of the country in awe of our ground and having it chosen as the main club ground in the 1966 World Cup, hosting one of the Semi Finals. With Goodison being capped at 40,000 as well in the 90's, it's amazing to think that in 1960 we had an attendance of 74,000+ for a 0-3 home defeat to Burnley, and a derby crowd of 72,000 in 1962.

I hope one day we get back to days like that where we were respected up and down the country rather than sneered at by pundits and other fans for daring to believe that we could be on a par with the likes of Tottenham and Man City or part of the 'Big 6'.

Well expressed that Degsy ;);), especially the part I've highlighted. That was my first season and although I saw much, much more on TV than I did live, some of the Holy Trinity play was beyond sublime.

..it was great to be the 'Merseyside Millionaires' but nowadays you need to be billionaires. How times change but beneath it all we're still a top football club.

The football was good at Goodison in the early 60's,but, from 66 to 70 it was unbelievable. I saw the 63 title side and I saw the 80's side, they were both very very good sides, but, the side in the late 60's was in my opinion, the finest English club side I have ever had the privelidge to see.
