Wenger to launch bid for Arteta | Sport.co.uk

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is preparing to launch a £10 million bid for Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta according Sport.co.uk sources. With Cesc Fabregas out for four months Wenger sees the combative midfielder as the ideal replacement for his captain.

Arteta scored twice for Everton in a 3-0 win at home to Sunderland on Sunday and despite being one of the Toffees most consistent performers David Moyes maybe interested in cashing in on his Spanish ace in order to strengthen his attack.

Moyes has been informed by Chairman Bill Kenwright that he can only sign new talent in January if he sells during the transfer window.

Wenger admitted to Canal Plus journalists that he is keen to sign to midfielders if he can in January, however he would not reveal who his targets were.

Wenger said: "I don't need to announce a name, because when you do that there is 50% less chance of making the signing. But I need a creative midfielder and eventually another midfielder, because we are short."

It pops up now and then, probably due to the similarities between Fabregas and Arteta in upbringing, style of play, even looks. Can't see him going though, certainly not for such a small fee.

Three hacks down the pub pooling possible names.

Hopefully it's not an option that anyone will seriously be examining.

While it's true that Mik wound up at the club as a result of the last time we cashed in a central midfielder who was on fire, it's equally true that we wound up paying silly money for a striker who couldn't score smack in Toxteth and we went from serious title contenders to scraping a CL place we couldn't justify.

mikel to join the venga boys?

that place is becoming a graveyard, and the elephant in change is slowly winding down.
the pressure of paying for a ground with the product on the pitch is starting to get to Magoo.

If we sold Mikel for less than £30m i would kill Bill.
30 million? Ha, sorry but Wenger is never going to pay that. And Bill will most likely accept a lot less. My guess of the price Mikel could be sold is somewhere in the 12-15 million range.

Hypothetical figures of what Bill would sell a player for - less that 24 hours after said player has stormed into form and won us a game.

the sound of the wind rushing is that of you plummeting.

For how many players have Wenger paid 30 million for?

Plus, remember the lad Kenwright said is worth 50 million? Who was soon after sold for a lot less?

30 million is silly, no-one is going to pay that. But as the club has admitted, there is no money for new players, so any decent offers will be considered. And if Joe Beardwood's (who is an accountant) article is anything to go by, the day Everton again has to sell just to keep afloat is drawing closer.

Youve missed the point tho clearly, i said "If we sold Mikel for less than £30m i would kill Bill.".

At no point did i say Wenger would pay it or indeed did i say i would accept £30m. But lets change my quote, it now reads.

"If Everton Football Club sell Mikel Arteta, i will hunt down Bill Kenwright and end his days"

Can't see this one, isn't Rosicky almost back anyways?.

Not a Wenger-esque signing, more likely to come after Gosling or Baxter!...

30 mill is silly, didnt stop manure or city. I dont recall mentioning figures, and I dont recall BK valuing arteta either. so, 'any decent offers' ? you doing a bit of mind reading? As for keeping afloat, who knows what payments are due on fads and AJ, we have the FA cup and league placing along with TV games revenue.

Sure it would be nice to cut ticket prices so more people come to the game, but who fancies a view of a pillar? i can provide that for free.

Sure it would be nice to pack corporate payers in, but we dont have the means.

Sure it would be nice if the ground could be used for non match day events, but its not capable.

still, at least we have some massive maintenance costs to pay, half a million quid for steel maintenance... get in, good as a new signing that!!!

OK, much better and clearer.

Trouble is, if Joe is right and no-one will lend the club any more money, someone has to be sold for big money (previous signings are still to be paid etc). And there aren't too many players in the squad who are worth a lot of money. Only a few clubs are going to pay the 10+ million for our players that would be required.
